I bet usenet has more users today then at anytime in the past. While
it's true that there are now alternatives, it's also true that more
people then ever have access to the web.

The worst troll in Usenet probably was S*rgar Ard*c. But he's been gone
perhaps ten years. As for wrecking a newsgroup, it takes two to tango.
All you have to do is ignore the OT posts and any post of those who
play that game, even the 10-20% of their posts that might be about what
this group is for.

Probably. I'm 24, but I'm the only person I know of who uses usenet.

Most people are using web-based forums.

Personally, I welcome this sort of migration. Usenet may yet revert to
being a smaller, more civilized place, like I hear it once was.

I don't understand the appeal of web-based forums. They're slow, clunky,
have extremely limited text editors and are in general just plain
annoying. I'll take usenet any day.

The appeal? On the server side, it's easy to get 'em going.

On the user side: cute HTML formatting, graphical smileys, more cute HTML
tricks, oh, and most kids don't know any better.
