Bad luck - these people are obviously rocket scientists, you can tell that by the way they would prefer for you not arrive at work fit, healthy, destressed and therefore more productive than your colleagues! I'm a bit of an evangelist for the commute at my place - pointing out ad infinitum how much better I feel when I arrive on the bike than wrestling with stinky buses etc, they're used to it now, plus they get to have a laugh when I come in limping from a fall...oops!
I know Bolton isn't quite Merseyside (?!) but still comparativley local compared to the US chaps here - we have the Merseyside Cycling Campaign merseyworld.commccOpen ↗ - I presume you have a local equivalent who will be able to let you know what companies can and can't do, it might be worth talking to them. I don't know if you're tied in with your local job centre (or whatever it's been rebranded to this week) but I think you should also tell them that you went for the interview, performed well and this is the reason you were refused. If you're serious about taking this up with the company - with a view to stopping it happening again - I personally wouldn't go the 'compensation shyster' route myself - instead talk to your local Citizens Advice Bureau, fine people who volunteer and will give you good advice. They will be experienced at the whole employment tribunal thing and have a far better understanding of UK employment law than us mere mortals, or me anyway!
Apologies for the long post - but I'm incensed by this😠 After all you'd think they'd at least have the common sense to say it was because "the other guy would fit better" or something - still smarts but at least it's legitimate!

PS Just thought... what about the people who drive home at 11pm? Presumably they are at greater risk falling alseep behind the wheel than you who'll be cycling on the quietest roads you're likely to get?!?!
