Do a google search on aspartame. Overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Thanks k, but I'm looking for a sugar substitute that won't raise blood sugar and insulin,
otherwise I'd just use sugar. Sorry I was unclear. So, honey, succanat, maple syrup and brown rice
    syrup are out.

Is there anything bad about stevia?

  7. Stevia rules......good for you, and sweet! We carry 100 grams of 90% extract for only $29.95.

Depends who you ask. Its a natural substance as opposed to created in a lab by accident (like
Aspartame) but it may have its downsides. Its been used in ancient cultures for perhaps 1000's of
years and its popular in Japan.

You can find lots of information on Stevia at stevia-plant.comstevia-plant.com

Ive never tasted it, but Id like to hear what other think.

Well while I wouldnt argue with your personal beliefs, I do think the evidence is at least
worrisome. I tend towards the least processing of anything that I am going to eat and therefore
pretty much rule out anything created in a lab.

I agree that sugar is highly processed and I tend towards those other sweeteners I mentioned
(Sucanat, Brown Rice Syrup, Honey) but I have no problem with sugar either. Im not in a situation
where I have to worry about my insulin or blood sugar so I cant speak to that.

Ive read some of the "unreliable" evidence surrounding the issues around Stevia and Aspartame and
subsequently Splenda and it makes me very wary of the motivations of companies like G.D. Searle,
Monsanto, and the FDA. I dont think they have my health and well-being first and foremost in
    their minds.

Of course you're entitled to ingest anything you like. Im just pointing out other options for Kev.

Well G.D. Searle and later Monsanto and the FDA would have you believe there is a downside. Some
    "unreliable" evidence:

I have. The 'evidence' is mostly anecdote. No good studies show that aspartame is harmful. If I am
incorrect, please cite the peer-reviewed journal article that shows I am incorrect.

Considering that Aspartame is mostly made of amino acids and it should be rapidly and completely
ingested, I doubt this is a common problem. The only reason why I go to the bathroom after
drinking it is to pee (ok, I occaisonnally [censored] too, but it has nothing to do with the aspartame
    or soda at all).

  16. Stevia is banned by the EU, as it showed serious side effects in teratogenicity tests in rates; i.e.
there is an elevated chance of miscarriage and birth defects. Not the stevioside as such, but the
aglycon, which is formed in the small intestine.

This is enough for the EU legislation to ban the substance. The fact that it is popular does not
mean it is harmless... (see alcohol or tobacco...)

Actually, our health and well-being is the goal of the FDA. The health and well-being of their

Apple, etc. It is the American way.

I agree. Im not sure it's wholly related to sugar though. There is some "unreliable" evidence that
suggests that non-caloric, artificial sweeteners may have a part to play though. I have met several
people that think its ok to down gallons of sugar free sodas and enough sugar free cakes, cookies,
candy, donuts, etc. to choke an elephant.

Yes chemically they are sugar. I was referring to the amount of processing these products undergo.
And as I mentioned I have no problem with glucose, fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose or sucrose

My "unfounded" opinion is that, even assuming the FDA and other government offices are not
corrupt, they are motivated by the interests of large corporations (i.e. money), are presented
with "good" studies that are funded by and possibly manipulated by these corporations, lack the
resources to fully investigate all the "good" studies and lack the resources to fund their own,
    independent studies.

Even in cases where they do investigate (Do a google on the Bressler report which can be found here
but its a long read dorway.combressler.txt) there are enough oddities there that make me
question the motivations of the FDA approving something like Aspartame for general use.

My opinion, and its just that, take it or leave it, is founded to me. I am not trying to present my
opinion as fact. Sorry if it comes off that way. I was trying to give Kev some other options that he
may not have been aware of.

I myself would probably not take any of the non-caloric sweeteners but Im not in a situation where I
care. My other unfounded opinion is that rather than look for an alternative to sugar, I might
suggest reducing or eliminating sugar from the diet and not replacing it with anything. That is not
to say don't eat but rather something like learn to drink your coffee with no sugar. There is sort
of a natural sweetness to a lot of foods that is masked with our addiction to sugar, fat and salt.
Again, my opinion only, based on personal experience. When I weaned myself off those addictions, I
found that the taste of whole, unprocessed food was sufficiently pleasing to my palate. YMMV.

Never found any serious evidence either... But : the toxicological data are often correct.
Extrapolation to humans simply means to drink the equivalent of 50 liter of diet coke per day for
the rest of your life or similar. Do that and yes, you will see side-effect (either from the coke or
the aspartame...) It is often simply a misuse of toxicological data.

Strangely enough, many people react like this on aspartame, misusing and strongly believing in
toxicological data. With stevia, where the toxicological data suggest it is unsafe, suddenly many
people do not believe the toxicology...

Plus 10-15% water, but for the body just as sugar as normal sugar.
