What size frame does Lance ride?

No, no, I'm not going to run out and buy the same size! I was browsing on ebay (which I do WAY too much), and I saw: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3620086816&category=22681 Wherein the seller suggests that maybe, just possibly, the Trek OCLV frame he's selling was once Lance Armstrong's. Heck, he bought it from some guy in Austin and it was a team issued bike. It's a size 58. He's 5'10". Uh-uh. I don't think so. Could explain why Lance smashed his nut in the tour, though.

No, no, I'm not going to run out and buy the same size!
I was browsing on ebay (which I do WAY too much), and I saw:
cgi.ebay.comeBayISAPI.dll Wherein the seller
suggests that maybe, just possibly, the Trek OCLV frame he's selling was once Lance Armstrong's.
Heck, he bought it from some guy in Austin and it was a team issued bike. It's a size 58. He's
5'10". Uh-uh. I don't think so. Could explain why Lance smashed his nut in the tour, though.

That is correct and measured center to top. That would be about a 55 c-c.

Lance most definitely rides a 58cm; on more than one occasion, we've set up bikes for him for
commercials shot in our area (unfortunately, they don't come back autographed!).
Keep in mind OCLVs are considerably smaller, in terms of top-tube clearance, than most other bikes.
TREK measures frame size from the center of the bottom bracket all the way to the top of the seat
clamp, which extends above the top tube.

That is correct and measured center to top. That would be about a 55 c-c.

Some of the early Lemond bike were OCLV. What they did to give the "Lemond fit" with a longer top
tube was to label them by using a c-c measurement. IF you do it that way, the frame will give a
longer top tube than many others. The funny thing is that it is the same frame. IIRC the 60 cm c-t
with a Trek badge was an exact equivalent to the Lemond OCLV models labeled 57 cm and boasting of
the "Lemond fit". Maybe Michael J. can confirm this?

I have the reverse dimension. I have longer legs in proportion to my upper body. I ride a custom 55
Cm Serrota with a 54.5 top tube (I had it shorten from the standard 55.5 CM).

Only if you think a center-to-center measurement is the way to measure a frame size. Personally, I
don't... with the differences in tube diameter, center-to-center isn't terribly relevant any more.
In my perfect world, all frames are measure from the center of the bottom bracket to the place where
the center of the seat tube intersects the top of the top tube, provided the top tube is parallel to
the ground.

So what you're saying, then, is Lance really rides a 55cm frame...
In terms of STAND OVER HEIGHT. But with a 57cm top tube it rides like a larger bike. I am sure this
has been discussed before, but determining frame size based solely on the length of the seat tube
makes no sense. There are so many other factors that go into frame sizing. IMO the top tube has a
lot more to do with a frame sizing correctly than the seat tube. I can adjust the seat height
infinitely, but I have a limited number of ~5mm increments to adjust the bars distance from my hips.
So, if all you care about is standover height, sure it fits like a
55/56 cm bike.
