rough average anual figure given by the cop being interviewed.
I spoke to a cop at a rodblock in NT , they were looking for some guy who
had abducted a couple of tourists . The cop said that about 200 people each
year disapear on the road between Pt Agusta and Alics Springs alone , not
counting the road from Alice Springs to Darwin .
There are a lot of hitch hikers and back packers traveling in lonely places
, and the odd crazy euro or jap tourist who decides they will pedal the 3 or
4 thousand kms from one side to the other of this island . I guess they make
up a part of the number.
I know I looked real good at each campsite for bones and stuff that could be
a disaperaed tourist .
