Meaning the ng name, rec.sport.unicycling.

I remember following the discussions in 1994 and 95, I got the
impression the matter had been discussed a fair bit before I joined the
list as well.
The RFD (Request For Discussion) on newsgroup creation was posted on 23
March 1995:

It was anticipated that people would argue for the group to be placed in
the alt. hierarchy, but a lot of people on the mailing list felt
strongly that this shouldn't happen. Part of the reason for the
newsgroup was to help unicycling become more mainstream. It was felt
that people coming to unicycling for the first time would take a rec.
group more seriously than an alt. group.
rec.sport was felt to be more appropriate than rec.arts. Most
non-unicyclists would regard unicycling more as an art than a sport, but
I think most people here would feel differently. Also, there was a lot
of discussion at the time about a long term goal of seeing unicycling as
an olympic sport. So the group had to go in the rec.sport hierarchy.
You can probably guess where the unicycling part of the name came from ;-)
