For the past four months or so I have been dragging myself into the garage and onto the wind trainer (Tacx Flow) at least four or five times per week. I mainly ride steady state for one hour at a heart rate of 152 bpm (my max is 190 bpm and I am 54 years old) and my average power for the hour has increased over the months from 160 watts to 230 watts. The problem I am having now is that I find it a struggle to get through the hour at that heart rate. If I drop the power output to a more comfortable level then obviously my heart decreases. Why could I once easily live through the hour at 152 bpm but now it seems too much. I constantly calibrate the Tacx unit so I know that is correct. Are my legs getting stronger but my heart can’t keep up with them? Is this normal? Do I now reduce my heart rate for the workout, which seems to me a backward step?
