Hi all - I just stumbled on this forum after searching the net for info on Truvativ bottom brackets. I had problems with Truvativ kit on my mountain bike. After faithful service from Deore kit when the time came to replace I bought a Fire X chainset and splined BB. The bottom bracket went west after just 200 miles of dry fire road type riding. The second BB was better .... but the shells seem to loosen very quickly leading to creaking and metallic clicking and the need to remove the cranks and torque the BB shells back up.
All thats bye the bye really as I have got ticked off and gone back to square taper Deore on the mountain bike. My real interest is in the Cannondale T800 touring bike I recently bought for commuting and road trips. This came with a Truvativ ISIS Gigapipe BB - very expensive and (so I thought) very tough. Well after 350 miles - cresting a hill in France with panniers loaded and feeling well pleased with my choice of bike (it really is so comfortable) there it was again. A nasty metallic click that was both loud and could be felt through the crank. In the space of 10 miles this progressed to a very loose clank clank clank.
I rattled into a small town and asked for the local "Velo Mechanica". The shop I was directed to seemed to specialise in the sort of two wheeled pornography we all dream about - carbon fibre bottle holders and frames so light they were tethered to the floor like airships in a hanger! Anyway, the mechanic took my bike and came back with it 5 minutes later having re-greased everything and torqued it up. Job done - for 5 euros. If you want to break down on a bike France is the place to do it.
Since then the bike has done another 370 miles. Guess what - yes the click is back. I took the bike back to the dealer today for a warranty claim on the bracket. Now the guys there were sympathetic but didn't hold out much hope of Cannondale agreeing to a warranty claim on a 750 mile old BB. We'll see (best fighting trousers on!).
If you are still with me - a question - if the warranty claim does fail and I have to stump up for a new BB what should it be. I am leaning back to Shimano perhaps LX Octalink even though that will mean replacing the chainset too. Oh and i forgot to mention - I ain't exactly dainty in the weight department so I give that part of the bike a hard life.
Any suggestions (apart from loosing weight) greatfully accepted.
