Isnt it time we re-examined the way we measure power output on the bike? Ive been digging into the differences between average wattage and normalized power, and Im left wondering why were still relying on average wattage as a key performance metric.
Normalized power, which takes into account the variability of power output over time, seems like a far more accurate representation of a riders true effort. And yet, many coaches and riders still focus on average wattage as the primary indicator of performance.
But whats the point of averaging out the highs and lows of a ride? Doesnt that just mask the true demands of the ride? And isnt normalized power a better reflection of the actual physiological demands placed on the rider?
Can anyone explain to me why were still clinging to average wattage, and what the advantages are of using this metric over normalized power? Are there specific scenarios where average wattage is more relevant, or is this just a case of tradition trumping innovation?
