  1. Noticed that some bike events include a "mountain cross" category -- is that
basically an obstacle course? Maybe like motocross with jumps and stuff but
    on a bicycle?

Same as DS (dual slalom) but instead of 2 people racing head to head, it now
has 4 people racing head to head on the same course.

I'd sum it up as a great way to get hurt. Just like skier cross!

Er, "skier cross"? I'm sure I haven't heard of that.

But now that I've read about mountain cross, I tend to agree with your
assessment, especially reading the bit about how it's anticipated to be a
crowd-pleaser due to the volume and drama of the crashes.

Everything's a fad. It's just some things take longer to go "out of
    style"......

Hmmm...or maybe an attempt to get mountain bike racing back on TV.
