Being in ketosis means your body has burned a large amount of fat in
response to the fact that it didn't have glucose available for energy
needs. Under everyday conditions, the carbohydrates you eat are
converted to glucose, which is the body's usual source of energy.
Whenever your intake of carbohydrates is limited to a certain range, for
a long enough period of time, you'll reach a point where your body draws
on its alternate energy system, fat stores, for fuel.

This condition called benign dietary ketosis (BDK), means your body
burns fat and turns it into a source of fuel called ketones. Ketones are
produced whenever body fat is burned. When you burn a larger amount of
fat than is immediately needed for energy, the excess ketones are
    discarded in the urine.

You can buy test sticks which you place in your urine stream to test for
ketones... which indicate your body is in ketosis.

When your body is being fuelled by breakdown products of fat rather
than carbohydrate it produces ketones. This is being in Ketosis. It
is NOT the same thing as the very dangerous ketoacidosis which
diabetics sometimes suffer, although both conditions involve ketones!

Some people test for it using a test strip that they pass through the
urine stream, as excess ketones are often dumped in urine. These
strips are called 'ketostix' and are available at pharmacies. Others
pay attention to the 'fruity' or 'acetone' aroma of their breath,
perspiration or urine to 'check' they are in ketosis. As long as
you're losing weight at a comfortable rate, there's no real need to
    check on it.

Ketosis is the state the body is in when it received insufficient carbs
to produce enough glucose to run on, so it burns fat instead, in the
    form of ketones.

This is benign ketosis, not to be confused with diabetic ketoacidosis,
which is a potentially fatal condition.

Although one can determine if one is spilling ketones into the urine by
using test strips, there's no real way for you or me to test if we're in
ketosis, other than to examine the amount of carb we're ingesting. Less
than 100 grams per day, and we're likely in ketosis. (The test strips
won't show purple -- i.e. presence of ketones -- if one is burning all
one's ketones as fuel or if one is sufficiently hydrated to have the
urine so dilute the ketones don't show up in sufficient concentration to
    turn the test strip colors.)

  5. there is a good article at:
    http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17364

    Here is the text:
The foundation of Dr Atkins whole nutritional approach is based on
converting your body from burning glucose derived from carbohydrates as fuel
to burning stored fat as fuel. This process is called lipolysis. A
by-product of burning fat as fuel for you metabolic functions are ketones
which are released in your urine & are chemical proof that your body has
switched over into the fat burning mode.

Lipoysis using Ketones as a fuel is a bichemical method for weight loss-the
alternative to using glucose for fuel, the very process that makes most
    people heavy.

In the minds of most laypeople & even some ill informed doctors ketosis is
    often confused with Diabetic Keotoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis is the cosequence of insulin deficient individuals (Type I
diabetics) having out-of-control blood sugar levels.

Ketosis & Ketoacidosis may sound alike but the actual conditions are
practically polar opposites. Ketoacidosis is distinguished by the fact that
the Type 1 Diabetic in this state has been consuming excess carbohydrates &
has extremely high blood sugar which is the exact opposite of Ketosis where
the person has been cosuming practically no carbohydrates.

Because of this confusion as of late the Atkins Center is now calling the
body's fat burning mode Lipoysis instead of it's proper description which is
    Lipoysis/Ketosis.
