reading this forum, i always see the word 'campy' used. what is this? is it short for campagnolo? i've been somewhat into road riding for the past 3 years or so, more serious in the past year to year and a half. been a bmxer for the last 10, so all this weird new lingo is throwing me off.

Yep, Campy = Campagnolo. Dates back to the days (pre ca. 1985) when Campagnolo putatively dominated the quality components market and the best bikes were "full Campy Record/Nuovo Record/Super Record". In some circles, the term "tout Campagnolo" was also used.

I'd just like to point out that the correct abbreviation of Campagnolo is "Campag".
"Campy" is like so nouveau, man. Cheap and tacky which Campagnolo most certainly is not 😄

Here in the US, at least, the term "Campy" dates back to the 1960's, perhaps even earlier than that. It came into wide usage during the US "bike boom", which began in the early '70s.

Trouble is, you Yanks slap it on as if it were jam (aka, "jelly"....*phfff*) or peanut butter. It's gotta be 'applied' sparingly with lots of butter......hmmmmm
