  1. Just gone & joined Audax UK, with a view to doing some structured cycling in
2008, as an aid to keeping the excess flab at bay.

ooh-err... not sure I should have done that!

You could do what some people do when joining a gym, i.e. feel good for
having joined, but then not going 🙂

You'll be OK. You get enough riding in and there is a range of
distances and terrains, to cater for various abilities.

My old clubs, ABC Centerville and Middleton CC, were both keen to
promote and take part in these events. My current club, Walsall Roads
CC, seem to concentrate on time trials as their core activity, with
only individuals doing Audax on their own. I'd love to do more of
    these.

Spooky! I'm waiting for a suitable envelope to appear and then I will
send off application for AUK. The chances, however, of me doing an
audax are slim. I just want something extra bicycle related to read so
am looking forward to Arrivee dropping on the floor.
(not to be confused with Pr0n mag readers who only buy for the
    stories) ;-)

Oh no. Vernon & I tried an upright tandem. Once. I aged ten years in under a
    minute. 'nuff sed.

We've also tried a recumbent tandem trike and that was huge fun - but Vernon
    didn't like it. Bah, humbug!

Well done! I've found Audaxing a great motivator for getting out and about.
It's worth exploring the DIY permanent options once you've sampled a few
organised rides. I'm aiming to do at least a 100km ride each weekend this
    season other commitments permitting.

The riding did nowt for my weight loss but probably staved off any weight
gain that'd take place as a result of my pie eating.

There's nothing stopping you from starting your season now ;-)

    Enjoy the experience. I have.

Ta muchly. I hope to do events up to 200km, as I'm okay on doing 100miles in
local parts. These days anything less than 25miles is a mere warm-up ;-)
More seriously - up to 50 miles locally and I'm not even slightly achy any
more, as my fitness has improved. Up to 100 miles locally and I'm fine too,
but more worn at the end. Of course - this is at my pootle-speed. I
certainly won't be doing any speedy times on audaxes...

Here's some useful tips for pootling. The minimum average speed for rides
of less than 200km i.e. 50, 100 and 150km can be as low as 8.3km/hr. It is
definitely 8.3km/hr if you ride DIY permanents. Calendered (organised)
rides at the above distances usually specify anything between 10 and
    15km/hr. A calendered 200km ride usually has a minimum speed of 15km/hr
thougb it can be a tad slower at 14.3km/hr if the 200km is a DIY permanent.

Don't worry about times - I don't and the York CTC crew laugh at me as I
don't worry too much about start times either and invariably roll up just
befor the 'off'. I've spent quite a while as the lantern rouge but have
worked my way up from the rear for most of the recent 100km rides though I
was last for the two calendered 200km rides done last season.

I shouldn't baulk at the 200km rides but they do take up a considerable
chunk of the day and if there's a drive to the start that a complete day
    gone.

I'm just eliminating the distant 100 and 200km calendered events for next
year before pencilling in my DIY permanents for a busy season ahead. One
ride done - thirty five or so to go......

    It's a sign.

I'm hoping it's a positive sign from the great gods of Audax.

On my usual Wednesday morning pootle there it was: in the verge.

    A badger: a dead badger.

I'm taking it as a sign of welcome from the great gods of Audax.

I've seen four dead badgers within 100 meters of each other, across
the last few years. Unusually, the other day, it was a dead fox that I
saw. The number of dead rabbits and squirrels that I regually come
across make it look like a massacre. Then again, I think the squirrels
are suicidal as I had counted twelve live ones within a 1Km stretch
that seemed intent on running under my front wheel. Crazy buggers!

In these parts, it's more often dead deer as well as the usual pheasants,
    rabbits, hares & rats.

On the living side, a lovely little stoat crossed my path this morning.

Oh deer. ;-) The pheasants are road-wise around here. I have seen a

  20. Hurrah! My other half has finally agreed that as I'm going to be doing the
odd audax, that Gino really does require a facelift. So Gino is to be
stripped down and sent off for a respray. Anyone got any feedback on how
good a job of redoing frames Bob Jackson Cycles are? I'd be quite happy with
Gino getting powdercoated locally, but Vernon is quite willing for Gino to
have the full stove enamelling jobbie. Then Vernon started rummaging through
bike catalogues at wheels, muttering "he'll need some new wheels too". So
Gino is going for the full-body plastic surgery it would seem.
