  1. After two lengthy spats with the CTC Membership Department already this
year,I now find I have not been sent any renewal documents so I won't be
able to renew on time, unless of course I ring a very expensive 0870 number.

On top of that I e-mailed them with a simple query nearly three weeks ago
and have not received a reply.

If it wasn't for the third party insurance I don't think I would bother.

The above is, sadly, typical of CTC membership chasing. In the years The
Unfit Family have been members, we've *always* had to take the initiative on
renewal of membership... and if I've ever emailed tham, I can virtually
guarantee I have to chase for a response. I had a spat with them over our
family membership. Our family membership is for yours truly, husband and
teenage son all living at same address as a family. Some twit incapable of
knowing what the CTC criteria for family membership are wrote to me saying
that as my husband is over 18, family membership does not apply.... a
lengthy discussion of what a family membership applies to, e.g. Vernon & I
as the two adults, & Nathan as our teenage son all at the same address does
come within the rules for family membership. Never did get an apology from
the twit who got it wrong though.

The only reasons we are members are 1. insurance and 2. Cyclists' Defence
    Fund.

CTC admin sucks and it's been brought to their attention many times and it's
been discussed on the NG many times, yet nothing seems to change :-(

    Cheers, helen s

Yes sadly you are right. They give the impression that it is run by a group
of amateurs in a church hall on a Sunday afternoon before tea with the
    vicar.
One of the worst things is that when you take things up with them, they lie
    to the back teeth.

I'm sure that I read that the CTC are dumping the current company who
deal with membership stuff for them once the current contract ends
because of complaints such as this.

This is correct, as I understand it. I have been told this by a
number of people at Cotterell House.

Join now. It's worth it for the insurance alone; in the event of a claim,
you get access to legal people who take up your case. Plus it started the
Cyclists' Defence Fund to aid cyclists who are being bullied by insurance
    companies.

The CTC admin is [censored], but the insurance is good.

You'll also get to find out about CTC groups in your area and stuff such as
organised rides, CTC meets. Nathan & I have been cycling to local CTC meets
over the summer holidays - cycle out to designated meeting point (tea shop,
pub etc), have refreshments/lunch/cake/tea & a natter & then cycle back
home, often in company of other riders who peel off route as we get closer
    to relevant homes.

In my local group, Nathan & I appear to be the youngest!

Apparently I am an urban warrior too ;-)

See CTC web site article "What makes women cycle?"

"More and more people promoting cycling are catching on to this and
marketing specifically to women via positive images of women of all ages and
backgrounds cycling in 'everyday' clothing doing 'everyday' things - you
don't have to don the Lycra and be an urban warrior just to go to the
    shops."

I am an urban warrior! Hear me *roar* my battle cry to the unobservant
    motorist: "W*nker!"

Note to self: Must try cycling whilst carrying out more of those everyday
    tasks...

    washing up
    laundry
    cooking
    having a bath
    clipping toenails
    visiting the loo

    I think I see a need for a unicycle ;-)

Sounds very good to me! Does it include bike cover, I wonder, or just
accident cover? I'll go and see 🙂

Thanks! Should I do it with them? If not, are there any
recommendations? Perhaps it's already on my household insurance with
Direct Line? Hmm... suppose I should check...

Depends on your circumstances. Only you know if it's right for you.

Yes, check. See what limitations there are on the policy in terms of value
of bike, types/makes of locks accepted and conditions such as does the bike
have to be locked to an "immoveable object" and if it's new for old value.

Not a premium rate number, which is the most expensive. But yes, people who
have an 0870 number earn from it. IIRC 0870 is national rate. Which does not
get the CTC out of the fact admin is el-crapo ;-)

Would a way round it be to do it online? I've just been able to join

I did that once... ended up having two memberships.... even though the CTC
