Sorry to hear that you didn't finish. If anything you were spared of some of the worst roads on the course (apart from the crappy back roads section of Lower Chilles Valley Rd.)
If you have exercise induced asthma, carry an inhaler with you. I always do. I rarely need it but weird things can happen especially when you're smashed and you're deep in the grasslands.
If you did finish in 12.5 then that would have been a fairly descent ride. Shaving 2.5 hours off that is a tall order. The easiest way would be to lose a lot of weight - which is much easier than stacking 20 or 30 watts on your all-day-power. It also helps you deal with heat a bit better and saves energy in the hills too. A bit of a win, win situation really.
Clip on bars, a helmet like the Specialized aero road lid and a tight fitting top will knock off a fair amount of time. Interestingly, Specialized did some wind tunnel tests on shaved vs unsaved legs and found about 90 seconds difference saved for the shaved - extrapolate that over a days riding and you might be pulling out the clippers and razor...
