I live in Minnesota and it's starting cool down fast here. I won't be able to ride outdoors much before too long. We have long winters here with a lot of cold and snow, so it's not the ideal cycling state during the winter. I'll get out as much as I can on my cross bike or MTB during the winter but when it's -10 degrees Fahrenheit with a -25 degree windchill, there's just no way. I get sick of logging endless miles on the trainer too!
What do all of you do during the winter to stay in shape?
Northern New York. I lift a few more weights, and ride rollers. Rollers are a little more interesting than trainers IMO. Pour in the coffee, CRANK up the tunes, and sweat like a pig all over the kitchen floor.
I ski a lot. Also in the winter I try to swim a lot since we have a lot of indoor pools in Colorado. Makes for good cross training and keeps the heart going strong, tho it does build a lot of upper body mass that's basically extra weight on the bike. I find the key to rollers or trainers is to do it while watching a movie, don't let yourself get off the bike till the movie is over, that's usually good for about 10 hours a week in the basement.

I ride about 75-100 miles on the weekends provided that it's not below 10-20 F Deg (wind can be a factor in coastal Massachusetts too). During the week I lift free weights 3 nights and do two 1 hour trainer sessions. I love to ski in NH and VT, but I still count the days until April. There is no off-season! 😎
Much the same kinds of thing as in summer, although the swims are shorter! 🙂 The cycling here is better in winter, as it's not so hot and muggy. I just turn my lights on a little earlier.
Put on a long sleeve jersey but still ride in shorts/knicks during the day. Think about wearing tights and a light windproof top if I'm riding early in the morning or late at night. There really is no such thing as winter in Perth.
I just do more swimming and running (i am a triathlete), tri is great as it builds superb all round cardiovascular fitness. Then, once the summer comes round again, you can whoop some a** in cycle races. I live in London, by the way, so I live in an eternal winter of endless rain.😄 🙄
Try to ride as much as possible (though obviously less) as long as temp is above about 20°F (~-7°C) if the weather and roads are dry. Keep up the swimming (usual aim for about 8 miles a week/3 sessions, if I can schedule around the selfish kiddie teams that hog the useful pool times 😠 . I may consider giving a fluid/mag trainer for home a try again, but I have generally preferred just using cross-trainer (Precor EFX545) at the gym when the weather is ultra-crappy. I just have had difficulty getting into the stationary bike groove.
Anyone use the balaclavas with the funky membranes over the mouth area for moisture/intake air temp control? Was wondering how well they work.
