  1. I'm am type 1 and I am having some issues with greater than normal thirst after lunch, even when
my blood sugars are normal (which they are most of the time). Today, injected 4 units of novolin
R, waited 30 minutes, and ate a lunch containing 90 g of carbs (usual ratio is 30 g carbs per unit
of insulin, but I delay the last 30g by ~2 hours when using regular insulin). I became thirsty
about 20 minutes after finishing lunch. My blood sugar was 69 one hour after eating and 84 about 2
and 1/2 hours after eating. During the several hours following lunch, I was thirsty enough to
consume 24 oz of diet sodas, and probably another 30 ounces of water. My frequency of urination
was greater than normal, but nothing like it is when my blood sugars have been ridiculously high.
My question is: what is causing the thirst in this case? Is the something in the food? It cannot
    be high blood sugars.

  2. what are you eating? If I have salty foods like pizza or Mexican, I'll get thirsty regardless
    of my bg's.

  3. Maybe salt in the food? Steph

  4. Maybe you're just thirsty?

How much water are you drinking the rest of the day?

    8 - 8oz glasses?

Are you drinking a lot of caffeinated drinks? They can dehydrate you.

It's not always the DM, sometimes it's just thirst.

  5. Also, if your diet drinks are caffinated, that can make your thirsty. Caffine is a diuretic. I've
heard 1 C caffinated beverage to 1 C water is the break even, as if you hadn't drunk any water at
all. Of course, that depends on how much caffine is in the drink. I *think* it was plain coffee.

Usually a salad with chicken and/or avacado, and also a low-fat microwavable dinner of pizza, pasta,
vegetables, etc. These low-fat TV dinners have anywhere from 40 - 65 grams of carbs in each one, but
I haven't paid too much attention to the sodium content. If necessary, I will drink a little fruit
juice or eat part of a granola bar to bring the carb count up to 85 or 90 g.

I did cut my insulin dose back to 3.5 units today, waited 30 minutes, but ate the carbs first and
seemed to have goodr results - not as thirsty and a blood sugar of 71 two hours after eating. At
that point, I ate my granola bar to cover the remaining activity of the insulin.

  7. I'm not knocking TV dinners, BUT they usually contain a fair amount of salt. In fact I had one
tonight! I like the small portions. If we (my wife and I) fix our own meals, the portions always end
up bigger than a tv dinner.
