  1. Im a 6'3 230 pound person that is in pretty good shape. I ve been running consistently now for about two years. However in the last couple of days my knees started hurting. Im now looking to diversify my workout with some bike training. I was looking at prices on the net, and they got crazy pretty quick. Im not looking to compete with anybody in any races, I just want a good bike that I could take out for a 2 hour ride a few times a week, and preferably under $500,although Im willing to spend more if I have to.Do I have to get a special bike beacuse of my size? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  2. No special bike required just a frame size that fits and is comfortable. Trek, Giant, and Specialized all make good bikes. Are you looking for a road bike or a mountain bike?

  3. You might also want to consider a hybrid. It's part road bike, part mountain bike. My old bike is a "Gary Fisher Zebrano S".( For sale) It's a 24 speed with 700 X 42 tires. I was up to 20 mile rides (and almost 10 pounds lighter) when I decided to upgrade to a road bike. And the Gary Fisher was only $440 new. Try out a few different type of bikes at your local bike shops. Try to find a bike shop that has a large selection of bikes to try. My favorite bike shop (not the closest) has a couple hundred bikes on display.RussB

Im considering a road bike, thats why I was asking about weight limits because I never see any people over 190 pounds on one.

I'm 225 pounds and I just bought one. As long as you don't buy one with super-light wheels or fork you should be fine. Just don't expect to be keeping up with anyone when the gradient turns up...🙄

I am 198 pounds and have a Specialized Roubaix Elite. As long as you stay away from the low spoke count wheels, most road bikes are fine up to about 235 pounds. I ride with a few guys who are pushing 250 pounds, and they have not had problems with their road bikes. I was 265 pounds when I started riding a hybrid (Specialized Crossroads Elite). My goal is to get to 180 pounds, and I waited until I got below 200 to get a road bike. That was more because of my age (54) and hesitancy to ride on 23 mm tires than it was because the bike would not hold up. With a couple thousand miles under my belt (and droping 65 pounds) I am more comfortable with the road bike.
