Steepness of the climb, distance leading up to the climb, length of the
climb, dumb luck, etc.... sounds like you covered them all.

that doesn't work, because a 600 couldn't do the flats in fourth.

Can't be true - at least the 500.
But our legend is that the 2CV (Citroen sardine can, a forerunner to IKEA

So if it can do it in 4th gear, it's a Cat 4, if the driver has to upshift
to 3rd, it's a Cat. 3... and if the poor, miserable little car blows its top
halfway up, that's Hors Category. I get it.

Was it in 1999 climb to l'Angliru, when most of the cars couldn't make
it and the spectators had to push them away to let the riders get
thru. Was not exiting, as the coverage was so poor because of the rain
(at some point only the stationary cameras near the finish worked),
but definitely an epic. H^2C.

2002 IIRC. Spanish TV did an incredible job against the conditions. I
still have the tape (once I get it back from the guy I loaned it to).

No, I meant 1999, won by Jimenes. Very bad conditions, Escartin fell
and had to quit. I remember it clearly, as it was the last major tour
with a Finn in it.

For my part, I could've sworn you were talking about 2002. They sound
quite similar in terms of riding conditions and their impact on the
race. Heras won, only to be eventually defeated by the Aitorminator in
the final ITT.
