  1. New chain. Leave the goo/grease on it, or strip it and put some proper chain
    lube on it?

strip it and put some decent chain lube in it.

Every time I've left it I've had very misbehaved shifting.

  3. Read the instructions that come with the chain.
It usually sayd to remove it with detergent. I prefer dishwasher
    detergent.

Cosmoline. Sounds like the name of a character on The Jetsons.
I've had no problems, with lots of chains over the years, leaving the
cosmoline adding some lube and going.

Agreed. Don't listen to the neophytes. Just throw a little of your
brand lube on it and go.

The lube a chain comes with is perfect for the internals but not so good for
the externals. You'll never get as thick a lube as what it came with back
into the pins again so you may as well leave it in for as long as possible.
However the lube the chain comes with is usualy pretty sticky so it attracts
    a lot of dirt.

I usualy run the new chain through a rag slightly damp with kerosene. Then
apply whatever you like to the outside according to riding conditions.

You don't say what brand. SRAM ships their chains with a VERY
expensive lube already on called Gleitmo. (Google it.)

Run it straight out of the package, and lube it like you normally would
after you ride on it some. (Around these dry parts, I run 5:1
    hexane:Mobil1.)

I use White Lightning, I applied it, and when riding. After a couple
hours in the mud, and a hosing down, it seems the chain was dry.

I seems that the combinations of, self-cleaning white lightning, heavy
mud in the chain, and then a bike washing, got rid of it. I just then
    reapplied White Lightning.

Speak for yourself, one bollock was nicely stitched the other looked like
he'd taken an apple corer to it! :o(

Mind you I faired better than my mate, they lost him under the anaesthetic
twice, apparently the surgeon said it was the most exciting vasectomy he's
ever done. Fortunately he's well and riding again but my mates still very
    sore about the whole episode.

You should've seen my urologist. He was very neat and tidy for both of
    my vasectomies. :-ppp

Both? OMG dude my eyes are watering at the thought. What did they grow back
together? You have my heartfelt condolences.

You mean all the way under? Mine took 20 minutes under local
    anesthetic, staple method.

Well, yeah, but I had a baseball sized hematoma for a month afterwards.
But once that resolved, the freedom and spontaniety it spawned was
    infinitely worth the ordeal....

No, I'm very squeamish when it comes to blood, surgery, etc. I was
amazed out how simple mine was. Sit down, lean back, put feet in
stirrups, novacaine, cut, pull, snip, staple, cut, pull, snip, staple,
no stiches, the cut was tiny, major wrapping, athletic supporter, tighty
whiteys, and I went back to work. Riding 4 days later.

I'm sorry. It was a crappy joke that you didn't get. On "Jackass",
Johnny stapled his scrotum to his thigh.

Pop culture references fall really flat if the other person has never
been exposed to the pop culture event in question.

    My apologies.

I haven't watched the movie yet but I've seen a few of his shows. If
that's in the movie maybe I'll skip the movie.
