- theatrical/dance: recently saw a production of "La Sylphide" in St.
Petersburg. 'twasn't choreographed by DonVon, however; or at least he
wasn't credited. It was well worth going for the experience - and the
Mussorgsky Theatre is quite lovely but next time I hope to see the
Mariinsky - but the lead chicks were pretty uninspiring even to my
fairly unjaded eyes. The lead dude was terrific though.

- training: took the Repin from Peter to Helsinki the morning of 10
Sep. We ended up alone in our (six-seat, like I'd only previously seen
in BBC comedy skits on e.g. "Dave Allen at Large"😉 compartment and
slept for half the 4.5 hour trip. Very comfortable and quite the
value, with breakfast included even.

- obedience: I demand the utmost - but rarely receive it. Ah well.

Recently saw Allegheny Pipe Band and Heather & Thistle Highland Dancers
in Ligonier Pa. River City Brass Band in Johnstown.
It's not Nouveau Amsterdam or St. Petersburg but I do the best I can.

And climbed the cyclone fence up to the top
Like any other vine provided folliage
But sported deadly berries in the fall.

Yes pretty bright red berries that would hang there
Against the light green folliage of the vine
So lovingly I tended to my nightshade
And gave it all the water I could spare.

There's nothing crazy, loud, or challenging about it. If it wasn't so
pretty, it would be boring.

That makes it a strange addition to the [John ] Zorn catalogue. It
seems that, after writing everything from improvised hardcore to S/M
symphonies, he decided to write something sweet and gentle. It's as if
Metallica made a disco album.

The thirteen musicians play in a variety of exotic styles, accented by
Zorn's American sensibility. He seems to be filtering world music
through the Manhattan avant garde.

Bridge to the Beyond, for example, is a hybrid of ambient and lounge
jazz, complete with humming theremin.

(A theremin is an early form of synthesizer that makes flying saucer
sounds.

Once you hear it, you'll say, "Oh yeah. I've heard that before."😉
Cutting Stone is a trance song built on a reggae beat. At the center of
the album is Mao's Moon, featuring Dave Douglas on trumpet. It sounds
like the love theme to a sentimental B movie.

The Gift has links to other Music Romance albums. Like its predecessor

If you can't take the boy to St. Petersburg bring St. Petersburg to
Pennsylvania. An a cappella group from St. Petersburg, Russia will be
in Somerset October 2nd. Tonight the Russian State Chorus is in
Johnstown. I have to wait till next September for a bagpipe concert. So
much culture. I better go listen to some Ozzie.
