Hello there rec.running....just thought I would check in and let those who might care---and that could be nobody!---that I had not fallen off the face of the earth. Good old AOL dropped their newsreader a couple months ago and I have not taken the time to sign up with or download another newsrgoup reader (any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, though...)
Anyway, good to see some of the faces (well, names anyway) that I've grown accustomed to over the last 5 years still hanging around...much of my time online lately has been spent over at the slowtwitch.com forum (for those that recommend the rec.sports.triathlon newsgroup---don't---have them go to slowtwitch instead) but it's time to get back here and weed through all the trolling and revisit with some.

Hey, Mike, good to see you posting again. I was thinking about you the other day - can't remember if it was tri related, quad dipsea related, or just wondering where some of the other posters have gone (my mind wanders during long runs or hikes).

Any browser will support the google newsreader. Several people use it in this group. Some people complain about its difficult interface. And others complain that it doesn't automatically quote text when one replies to a post.
Hey there Dot...I know what you mean about the mind wandering...did a 5-hour bike ride yesterday and I finally thought to myself "one of these days I will keep track of every subject I think about on these things", cause it is all over the map.
On the bad side, saw two different accident scenes yesterday, both involving motorcycles---ambulances, fire trucks, etc.---which was pretty bizarre. Hardly ever see something like that and to see it twice, within about 15 miles of one another.

I'm using the Google option at the moment; my main complaint, and perhaps there's a way around it, is that it doesn't give you a way to compile in one area all the NG's you subscribe to. That was one of the few good things about the AOL newsreader---I could look at a window and at a glance all of the groups I was subscribed to would be there, with how many new posts, etc. That part was easy.
Though I'm pretty computer literate, when it comes to this stuff I'm still a bit of a dinosaur. Oh, well...
Was wondering where you might be! Still debating on this year's IM---possibly California Man, IM Florida or even that little thing down in Clermont. Signed up for IM Arizona for next April; in the meantime, will do a sprint, one Oly distance, one half, Alcatraz and then one of the IM's...which will "only" be #5 for me!
Good to hear from you...I'll let you know if I do decide on GFT as I'll lean heavily on you for advice there.

Hey, Mike.
I don't hang here too much - mostly lurk.
Most of my time is over on the Great Floridian forum, once it starts heating up.

Doing any IM's soon?
# 9 coming up in October. (GFT)

Hello Mike Squared,
Good to see you appear back and visit. I'll have to check out slowtwitch and the Great Floridian forum. Mike T. found the forum and just checked it out also view slowtwitch.
Nice to know like many over the past year or two, old rec.runners have found it easier to lurk and play at other sites and forums.

Since I'm on a Mac I use YA-NewsWatcher so that I have all the news groups available that my ISP has available without subscribing to any. Or at least that what I think I'm doing.
Good to see that you are still around and posting. Your wisdom has served me well over the past 5 years or so, and I often think in a given situation where someone has asked me "x" about running "now, how would Ozzie respond to this?"
Though we've not yet---and may never---crossed paths in person, I consider you a friend.

I see this in the "My Groups" button in the upper left. However it is not always in sync. My guess is that google is updating some things, such as posts, almost immediately. But other things, like a search index to all the newsgroups, is updated on a periodic basis, e.g. every six(?) hours.

Hi Rick...I see the same thing---I've got several newsgroups I've subscribed to there, and I suppose it's the next best thing to what I was using prior. In many ways I am very computer literate, but in this arena I'm very much a dinosaur. Get used to doing a certain thing a certain way, and then take away the ability to use that "certain way" and I'm lost!
