The other day I was extremely sleepy and half asleep, half
awake. My ear was bothering me and I tried to clean it with
a q-tip. When I stuck the q-tip in to a certain point, my
ear plugged up. It was like the q-tip touched something and
that caused the ear to plug up. It didn't seem like it was
far enough down to have pushed wax in to block it but I
don't know if was wax or not. I do have TMD/TMJ and I know
that can cause weird ear problems like a plugged ear from
having fluid in the ear, a closed eustachian tube, and
something about some tiny bone. But would anyone have any
idea what would cause my ear to plug up based on what I said
happened? I went to the doctor 3 months ago and he said I
had little wax in that particular ear so I find it hard to
believe it was wax. But now that my ear is plugged up, my
jaw, neck, ear, and cheek area hurt like crazy where before
they didn't hurt. I'd go see a doctor but I don't have
insurance and can't afford to go to the doctor. My parents
won't pay for it either.

Gee, thanks.
My ear seems to have fortunately popped open again. But it
would be nice if just one person could tell me why it gets
plugged up. -

the possible causes for you, but you can find that in
textbooks and web sites. If anyone does tell you what the problem is without having
examined you, you can safely assume they're full of [censored]. -

Without looking in your ear, *nobody* is going to be able to
cell you exactly what happened. My best guess based on your
story is that you jammed a bit of wax against your eardrum.
I hope you've at least learned a valuable lesson from this:
don't put anything in your ear that's larger than your elbow
(read: quit using the freakin' Q-tips).Quoted message said:

I'm insulted that you would think I'm that stupid after I
already said twice that I didn't mean to. I have three sleep
disorders and on a rare occasion I wake up in the middle of
the night so sleepy that my brain doesn't work right. I end
up doing silly things sometimes that I don't mean to do,
this was one of them.I also didn't mean that I expected anyone here to diagnose
my problem. All I was looking for was ideas on what it could
be since I can't go to a doctor. -

sorry your post didn't net what you wanted.Quoted message said:

the eardrum). The lecture about putting q-tips in your ear
went along with it, but frankly that sounds like good
advice. If you're so sleepy you do stuff like that, then get
maybe you should get rid of the q-tips? -

stylus the perfect instrument for removing earwax
buildup. :o)Actually, I had a buildup last year that resulted in intense
pain right through to my jaw, neck and cheek as you
described, and it lasted for a week. Ear-wax removal drops
did not work, and in the end I ended up going to emergency
as my doctor was away. They flushed it using a special syringe, and it was
INCREDIBLE what came out. It looked like green & brown
'turds' .. many little logs about a 1/2inch long. The nurse
had held a kidney-shaped bowl below my head to catch the
water & wax, and it was literally swimming with 'stuff'.The procedure took 2 minutes and hurt like hell when he
performed the flush, but the pain I'd been feeling up to
that point was immediately relieved. Again, I could not
believe the amount of 'stuff' that came out - and I'll tell
you, there is no way you'd ever hope to remove even a tenth
of that with a Q-tip (or PDA stylus)..
