There's a Jamis Quest at Spoke(n) for $1700, 853 Reynolds, CF fork & everything else that's shiny is 105. complete bike. Nice colour too, navy blue & brushed alloy.

So, what to get?
The brief is 55/6cm frame
wanna use it for Sunday 'longer' rides-100k rides.
(when it's dry 😄 the 'other bike can get wet).
Wanna use it for racing too
Im 83-5kg (85 currently but...)
and tend to 'make things move' on frames 🙄

Im not overly in love with the idea of going to a total CF frame again
(yes i know that is laced with bias against ALL CF frames and
non-Bianchi's might be fine, but still).
Definetely CFork tho (the comfort and stability is just too
irreplaceabe).

Options?:

853 steel-is-real.

853 with (muscle)carbon rear end

Alu with CF rearend

Titanium (xacd 'airborne torch' copy)
[This one is a favourite at the moment as i can buy 2 frames-2nd being
a kickarse commuter😄-plus top CFfork and new shoes for the bucks!)

Why? Did the bike shop tell you to nick off? Surely there is a
possibility that it was simply a manufacturing rather than a design
defect or have I missed a posting on the subject?

Any pot-hole that would cause that sort of damage to any reasonable
frame would have bent that wheel and/or popped/deflated the front tyre
surely. Given that you didn't experience that sort of failure, it
shouldn't be fairly hard to argue that the frame was *defective*.

Or you could ask Suzy to make you a custom...

Apart from the warranty issue (WTF?!!!) you can get a
good Al Alloy/105 Trek in roughly your size from Cycle
Science in Mitcham for $1999.

ob disclaimer, they are my LBS, but I don't (yet?) work for them 🙂

I can testify to the quality of the frameset, I'm bigger,
heavier and harder on bikes than you, and mine has almost 54,000km
on it, including a couple of Warny's and some wins in crits
and road races.

I'd definitely go the Ti frame. I've got one, standard size 53 but with
concealed rear brake cable and downtube bosses which are not standard
but they didn't charge extra for. Quite light, really nice to ride
(radiused seat stays), well finished. Looks really nice too -
traditional geometry, not a compact frame. I ordered mine and had it in
2 weeks... I got the brushed finish which was slightly extra. Also got
their CF road fork "just to have a look" and it's quite nice actually.
I built it up with Centaur and now I commute on it as well as my
Saturday rides.

Only suggestions:

- to buy a couple of extra bits as apparently the bank of chine takes
out $20US and in my case it was easy enough to drop out the seatpost to
make up the shortfall
- their Ti stem is nice and light, but I don't really like the
appearance and it seems a bit flexy on sprints. But I still use it so
no big deal
- you should allow for the BB shell and head tube to be faced at your
LBS
- their Ti seat post clamp is a pile of [censored]. Get an alloy one at your
LBS.

If you do get one, it'd be great is I could piggy-back a CP seatpost in
the box with your frame. I'm in need of a new one sometime soon...

Come on, they have to admit there was a problem with frame. No dented rim, no puncture, this is a scandal, I will NOT shop with them ever again. I sit 200 meters away from them at work. Grrrr.

can we please leave that subject alone for the mo. Im the only one with a beef (at the mo!). If this whol thing goes pear shaped then its full medieval time, but till then the diplomatic core shall be dispatched.

and why the brushed look? easier to maintain/clean or just a cosmetic thing?

Ah, I was under the impression that the diplomacy phase was over, that they had told you you would not get a replacement.

Fair enough, but surely you can understand why we're all interested in

I've been through an experience at another bike shop because the bike
they sold me was clearly unfit for purpose and their 'service' was
generously described as [censored]. It ended with me writing a letter saying
all the right things about fair trading, small claims etc, which
resulted in free upgrades, free bike transport and overall restitution.

I know how you're feeling about being shafted by a shop you previously
were happy with and spent many dollars at.

Despite the aggravation I think you MUST see it through even though it's
a [censored] experience for all. Whether they pay up or not, you're not
going back again right? So it must be worth a try. And if it comes to
it, small claims doesn't cost you much.

I just can't see how they can defend themselves, under the
circumstances. And I'm sure the Dept of Justice/Office of Fair Trading
would be very interested in what I think is a clear conflict of interest
between AK and Bikesportz (or whatever the importer's called)?

Don't give up FD! I can help out with appropriately worded letters -
I've had several successful experiences with this kind of thing.

Anyway, to answer your question:

My reasoning is: aluminium is for MTBs and soft drinks, CF is clearly
[censored], so air hardened steel is the only way 😉

The Quest is actually Reynolds 631, just in the main tubes.
The Surly Crosscheck cyclocross frame is nice -

interested. Was thinking about getting one myself but changed my mind.
Again a cyclocross bike, sells for about $2100 aud. Strong 36 hole wheels
and carbon fork. Black for all those evil riders 🙂

My sister recently purchased an 05 Giant CRX2, and I'm quite impressed
with it. I think the 06 ocr2 would make a nice
road bike commuter. The fact you can put a rear pannier rack on it is
great and the chainstay length is spot on at 418mm. Hopefully my next bike
purchase.

When I ride over 100k's+ I always take a pannier bag with food, map
and jacket. Less aggresive frame geometry helps as well at this distance.

obvious reason. But, if I move back to europe, I will buy a ready

The work very closely with Easton, and use their carbon stuff, rear ends and forks for the aluminium models.
I reckon a race with full ultegra under 4000 and under 8 kg is a hard to beat offer. 🙂 Got a very very good review in Australian cycling. Not that it means much though, I saw those fekkers review a gitane without ONE word about how it rides. Not a word. That was over TWO pages. Funny.
They do custom too if you want to go that route again.
If I bought Oz bike, that would be the brand.

The best I can describe it is similar to those stainless steel
appliances like kettles etc. But a little darker, and not so silvery. I
have some tube samples of brushed and blasted I could loan you if you'd
like to have a look? But I'm in Perth so I could put them in a post
satchel so long as you promise to return them?

As to "why", well it looks a little less noticeable when scuffed, and
if the scuff is noticeable then you can buff it out with steel wool.
The problem with blasted is that once it's scuffed then there's no
going back.

It is pretty good, no problem at full sprint or climbing, and I'm
85-90kg... I had a 105 chainset on it at first, and now have a centaur.
Before that I would have said "slightly too flexible" as there was a
bit of rub, but the centaur has cured it, leading me to think my old
105 was either warped or just too flimsy...it seems to be a good
balance of stiff and compliant.
