their own personal website, just so as to prove they weren't lying
about where they lived.

There are no similarities at all. This character appears to call other
posters f***wit and f***tard with astonishing regularity, which
simply signals either that he's run out of ideas, or he sticks to
formulaic insults so as to not stand out from the crowd. It also
signals that he's "lost it", to a degree.

The similarity, as I stated, is the confrontational manner. Your styles
do differ, partly in that one provokes people to insults and the other

I don't know why an academic would equate a .ac email address with
entertainment value. Possibly imagined credibility, but do remember, not
everyone with a .ac address is an academic. The maintenance/admin staff
often have email access, so could post using those and make just as
important a contribution to any discussion (although they probably get
less time to waste on usenet).

IMO trolling might be said to be posting for insincere reasons.

Where the actual motivation behind a post differs markedly from
the apparent intention.

So that if someone is particularly cruel it may be possible for them
to troll an individual into posting reams of material in response to
one line questions.

Or in the more classic sense as you say, get a group at each others
throats arguing over whether say Ice Skating really is a fit subject

I was talking more of what they choose to put in their Organisation
Field, which IIRR is purely discretionary on their part. Unlike

The problem was that I *didn't want* the extra free bog rolls. I find
it extremely offensive that you try to take things I post in other
contexts and quote them against me, however. It discourages people
from being frank, and although it washes over me it may put other
people off. To be frank, it's obnoxious behaviour. Like doing a web
search on my name to see if there's any way to discredit me.

work for is showing off and an attempt to imbue their posts with

I've never heard of this other bloke and I very rarely venture into the uk.*
groups.. A quick look at his headers shows he's posting from a German
server (ie, [email hidden]) whereas I post through IHUG's NZ
server (even though it pretends to be dinky di it's actually in Auckland).
