  1. I am currently trying to lose weight. I am swimming about 2k per day and watching what I eat. The
weight _has_ been coming off quite nicely, but I have now reached a plateau. I have seen ads for
tablets which are claimed to increase the ratio of fat being burnt while exercising. Does anyone
have any experience of taking these ?

The only other option is to eat even less and swim even further. (I'm nearly 40 and feel I am close
to the physical limit of what I can do.)

If you were losing weight on the same diet and exercise program you are using now, there is no
reason it would stop working. I suspect you are sliding on the diet or the exercise or both.

I wrote several posts here over a period of about ten weeks, during which I used the Atkins diet to
take of about 10 kilos. When I got to my goal weight of 87 kilos, I stopped losing weight, but it
was because I had increased the amount of high glycemic carbohydrates gradually so that the weight
loss would slow and stop at 87 kilos.

If you want to lose more weight, I guess I would recommend eliminating all refined sugar, white
flour, potatoes, and rice from your diet. If this leaves you feeling hungry, eat a piece of cheese
or a hardboiled egg whenever you feel hungry. Drink tons of water. Work hard in the gym and in the
pool. Vary your exercises. Include swimming, aerobics classes, spinning classes, kickboxing, step
    machines, and some weights.

Because if you're losing weight and not getting enough fluids, you'll feel depressed and torpid. At
least that's the way it affected me. Amazing recovery once I started chugging water instead of
caffeinated diet soda. The caffeine was causing me to pee out more than I was taking in.

What plateau did you hit? Maybe your body likes it there. Don't rely on a BMI chart to know what you
should be at. 2 years ago I was at a BMI of 25 (beginning of overweight) despite a 12% BF and a
33inch waist. And it stayed there as long as I was training hard. When I eased off, I couldn't
maintain that weight. However, before I got there, I hit other plateaus. You just have to figure out
if you're at the bottom rung or not.

While Martin still loves to promote low carb diets, I'd suggest you first try mixing up your
routine. Doing any similar physical activity will result in adaptation within 2-3 months - end
result is you're burning substantially fewer calories to do the same work. Your 2k - is it all
freestyle, or a medley, or what? Consider replacing a couple days a week with running (high cal), or
    if that's too rough, biking.

I am 228lbs (6' 1" tall). I was 245lbs when I started and the weight came off steadily, but now its
just hovering. Still plenty of fat to go at !!

I used to just do 1x1500m free, but now I mix it up quite a bit ie 10x200m free one day and 20x100m
free the next. I also have started doing backstroke. Despite doing 1500 a day previously, I
couldn't do backstroke at all. I felt dizzy after 50m!! Now I can do 20 backstroke non-stop without
    any ill effects.

I have got used to eating less. I used to get really lightheaded if I did not eat on time, but now I
    am more tolerent.

  7. for sure you have to train in the opposite intensity. i mean, very easy (60% of your max heart rate
) and very intense (95% of your maxhr) but not in the middle. training in threshold will help you
loosing some water but will come back right after drinking a glass of water...

If you can get access to a consistent measure of BF, log it on a weekly or biweekly basis. I've used
the electric scales. You're not aiming for true accuracy, just a trend line. One good explanation
for a plateau would be building muscle mass, which would be indicated by a lower BF, or looser
    fitting pants.

Do you drink much? Alcohol appears to have effects beyond the mere calorie count. Try going dry for
a couple weeks and see if that lets you break through.

So you're varing the intesity some, but you're only begun to vary the content. 100s or 200s are
definitely better than the single 1500 - when I swim longer legs my heart rate is under 120. You
want to have intensity - but sustainable intensity, mind you. Bring breastroke in as well, and
definitely look to adding a different form of cardio soon. I think swimming is one of the harder
ones to use alone to lose weight. All are easier with a mix.

I have just started to do this. I only have 1 weeks of reading so far. Still, than can be my base-
    line from now.

My pants are falling down! I have lost inches around my waist.

I have stopped drinking for now.

    Noted.

    Thanks for the advise Jason.
