Weight loss during a race -- a case study

  1. I ran a trail 1/2 M today (13.4 miles per GPS, 1800' of climb).

    Before I left, I weighed myself on my digital scale: 153 lbs.
    During the race I drank a 20 oz bottle of Cytomax (wt: 1.25 lbs).
    After the race I drank a 16 oz bottle of water (1.0 lb)
    After the race I ate a 6oz cookie (choc chip, of course). (.375 lbs)

    I weighed myself right after the drive home: 148.5 lbs

    So: I lost 4.5 lbs -- after eating 2.6 lbs of water and food, in a race
    that took 1:44:00 to run.

    This implies that during the race I lost about 7 lbs in under 2 hours!

    Conditions were mid 60's, foggy (therefore fairly muggy for L.A.), no sun.

    I know I have a fairly high sweat rate, usually 40+ oz per hour when racing
    at slower ultra speeds.

    One possibility is that I burned through 2.5 lbs of glycogen stores, and the
    other 4.5 lbs represents a sweat rate of 41 oz/hr.

    Anyone else studied their weight on races?

    Did you check your urine color to see how dehydrated you were? Here's a

    7 pounds seems like a lot for just 13 miles, especially for someone
    weighing 153 pounds. That's about 4.5%. I believe that at the WS100 they
    can withdraw you from the race if you have a 7% loss of weight.

    From a book I am currently reading, "Performing In Extreme Environments"
    (thanks Dot), here's how the author describes finding your sweat rate:

    1. Record body weight before and after 1 h of exercise or rest in heat.
    2. Calculate the difference (D) between these rates.
    3. If clothing is wet, the increase in clothing weight should be noted by
    weighing it before and after heat exposure. This increase in weight
    represents sweat that was produced but remained in the fabric, and should
    be added to D (step 2 above). If nude body weight is taken, this step can
    be ignored.
    4. The weight of fluid consumed during step 1 should be added to D.
    5. The weight of urine lost during step 1 should be subracted from D.
    6. Your hourly sweat rate (in kg/h) equals D (step 2), after correcting for
    the items in steps 3-5.
    7. Weight loss should be replaced by consuming 1 L of fluid for each
    kilogram of body weight that was lost.

    Again, according to the book, the typical water loss for a marathoner
    (5:00-10:00 pace) is 1-1.5 L/h. So your 40 oz is about 1.2 L/h, so it's
    right in the normal range. For 100 mile ultra runners (12:00-18:00 pace)
    it's .7-1.2 L/h. So you're at the top of the normal range.

    i dont study my weight, persay, rather i weigh myself, them my BM and then
    myself again and i try to see what the difference is.

    You probably shouldn't add in the weight of the cookie as it's not fluid?
    But it would count to counter glycogen burned, hmm.

    This is a really interesting observation because water is stored with
    glycogen also. Since it can take longer than 24 hours to fully restore
    glycogen, one would expect to remain a bit lighter until this happens. But
    how is the water stored with the glycogen used? Is it used metabolically?
    If so how much is used this way? Is some of it available for sweating?

    An aside is that on severe low-carb diet one strives to go without glycogen,
    thus emptying their stores in the first week of the induction phase of the
    diet. This can lead to water (and glycogen) loss of about 6-7 pounds. After
    this happens you're not dehydrated. If you lose that all at once from
    exercise, instead of over a week, I guess it throws the body out of balance
    too much and causes problems.

    I know for one thing that my legs scream at me until I feed them back all
    their glycogen after hard exercise. When I experiemented with low-carb for a
    year, I didn't have this problem because I found it very difficult to do any
    hard exercise. Now my #1 priority after exercise is to eat a generous amount
    of carbs and hydrate within 30 mins after exercise.

    lol interesting chart Phil. Mine was about a 5 or 6 after today's long run
    and I was down 3 pounds (about 2%), though I'd consider a 4 on that scale a
    sign of dehydration, not the 7 they suggest.

    This is basically the the formula I used today when figuring out my sweat
    rate, though I used 4 hours as the time period. For a long mostly easy run
    on an extremely humid day my sweat rate came out to about 40oz per hour.
    (Consumed (4) 20oz bottles + (1) 1 liter bottle = 113 oz over 4 hours, and
    lost 3 pounds = 48oz (~16 fluid ounces per pound). So 161oz over 4 hours,
    40oz per hour). Also took 4-5 s-caps to be able to absorb 28oz per hour.

    In a short race, I'll let myself get dehydrated. If this were an ultra (5-9
    hours in length, e.g.), I would have had about 80 oz in the first couple of
    hours. The ultra culture is to stop at aid stations and tank up, often
    spending a minute or more per station.

    When you're running hard in a shorter race, every minute counts, and it was
    hard to justify spending the 4 minutes for me to tank up properly. The guys
    you're racing with barely break stride at aid stations. You're either
    grinding up at 9:xx/mile, or blasting down at 6:xx, with very little flat
    running. I sort of guesstimated that my dehydration would costs me 2
    minutes in this race, and that it wouldn't have been effective to take the
    extra time to replenish properly.

    The main thing I didn't do per the above protocol was weigh clothing before
    and after. It's not practical to change out of and weigh clothes at a
    trailhead parking lot teeming with eco-femmes :-)

    oz/hour over a 5-7 hour race.

    The 6 oz cookie was weight added to the system, so you gotta count it.

    Well, eventually most of the cookie (eaten right afterward) would end up
    replenishing glycogen lost. But it's still just weight added.

    And indeed, that is how it seems to work -- takes a day or two to get back
    to pre-race weight.

    I imagine the water that is released when consuming the glycogen rejoins the
    vital bodily fluids, and is available for sweating, blood plasma volume,
    etc.

    I've kept fairly detailed weight records in my running work-out log
    for past few years.

    There may be some info here that's pertinent to your curiosity about
    your situation.

    I'm a male, 62 years old, 74 inches tall, weight naked right after
    running stays in the range of 158-164 pounds.

    I run for fitness, have never competed against other runners.

    A typical warm-up, then run, and then cool-down regimen for me takes
    about 80 minutes. This _IS NOT_ a "race-pace".......it's my 6
    times per week "grind".

    I weigh myself, naked, just before I start my workout. I weight myself
    again, naked, immediately after I finish the above work. I don't eat
    or drink any liquids, nor do I pee at any time during this 80 minute
    work.

    I'll fast walk/slow jog (warm-up)for 1.25 miles. I'll then run
    non-stop for 4 miles at pace of about 9:30 to 9:45 per mile. Then I
    do another 1.25 miles (cool-down) at the fast walk/slow jog.

    My weight loss surely varies with the air temperature and amount of
    cloud cover. I run at an altitude of about 5300 feet, on flat
    asphalt.

    At 25-35 degrees F air temp, I typically lose 1-1 ½ pounds
    At 35-45 degrees, I lose 1 ½-2 pounds
    At 45-55 2-3
    At 55-65 3-4
    At 65-75 4-5
    At 75-85 5-6 1/2

    That makes sense, except why does it take 4 minutes to "tank up
    properly?" I can understand in an ultra where you need to attend to other
    needs, such as solid food, blistering feet, etc. In the races I've been
    in (no ultra trail races yet), I'm able to either rehydrate while
    running, or slow down to a fast walk for about 10 seconds to guzzle 20 oz
    of fluid.

    A practical ultra runner? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. ;-)

    There may be a difference between a book and first-hand, personal
    experience. Additionally, even though it sounds like you are calculating
    your sweat rate properly, maybe they are just guessing.

    Here they just had small cups 2/3 filled. I would have had to stop and
    drink 4-5 of them at each of the 4 aid stations. I didn't see any pitchers
    handy.

    In ultras out here, aid stations are optimized for bottles, and the workers
    have pitchers on the ready to quickly refill them. Then you can drink on
    the run without losing more time.

    You're lucky. I'm breathing too hard. Takes me much longer to drink that
    much between breaths -- at least 40 seconds.

  17. I presume you pee'd too in the 2 hours. That can be a pound or two.

    Some ultras kick you out of the race if your weight falls
    more than 5%.

    I wish this has come up last week. I just finished a 32 miles of a 70
    mile relay(Laurel Highlands) with temps in the high 70's and humidity in
    the 90's. I pushed a lot of fluids and an S!cap an hour. There was a
    voluntary(unlike some races were weigh in's are mandatory) scale
    available but I never thought to weigh myself. I glad I opted to do the
    relay this year I'm not sure how I would have done with 70 miles in that
    humidity.

    Even I'll skip the kissing a girl tease. 🙂

    I've wondered if the author/publisher or Amazon.com recognize how many
    times that chart has been posted from their back cover browsing? Impact
    on sales? 😉 Seriously, it really is a good book - for things besides
    the urine color chart, and Sam was the one that turned me onto it. It's
    the only book I've found, other than Iditarod training manual, that
    addresses cold weather activities in a reasonable way. I haven't had
    time to read the hot-weather stuff yet.

  20. Another factor is time delay: what was the time lapse between
    finishing the run and the weight measurement?

    The core body temp was likely elevated and you continued sweating even
    though you stopped running, so the time lapse must include that period.
