  1. Quick background: 2 years ago I had congestive heart failure
brought on by the birth of my daughter. This was my one &
only pregnancy. I'm currently 42. For the last 2 years I've
been on Coreg, Lotensin and Digoxin. My Dr. says I'm very
    much improved.

Before my heart problems I was always on the heavy side.
On the medication my weight was the lowest it has been in
20 years. I had a very diminished appetite. 3 months ago
my Dr. took me off of the digitalis. I immediately gained
all of the weight back. He assured me that the digitalis
had no effect on my weight. From my experience I knew this
could not be right. I found in the PDR that digitalis is
prescribed by some doctors for weight control (although it
is strongly stated that it should not be done.) So that
tells me that the dig was in fact helping to keep my
    weight down.

Now for the question: I have been told many times that it is
very important to keep my weight down. I have always had
weight problems and now I am back to being over-weight and
I'm always hungry. Does anybody know anything about taking
digitalis and it's connection to appetite? Does anybody know
of any other product out there that kills the appetite as
effectively as the dig? And what are the risks in regards to
CHF? (I know that there are links between valve problems and
Phen-Fen, Meridia, etc and I'm not interested in taking
medications that could cause further heart problems.)

I can't get any of my doctors to tell me one way or the
other what O-T-C options I have or prescription options I
have. All they will say is eat less and exercise (within
moderation because of my heart) more. That's fine and dandy
except that I'm starving all the time!

Any suggestions, comments or personal experiences will be
    greatly appreciated!!

I would guess that you developed a post-partum
    cardiomyopathy (PPC).

the last 2 years I've been on Coreg, Lotensin and

About a third of women with PPC will improve, a third will
stay the same, and a third will worsen.

    Quoted message said:

    Uh-oh.

    Quoted message said:

On the medication my weight was the lowest it has been in
    20 years.

It might have been from your heart condition (PPC) rather
    than the medications.

    Quoted message said:

I had a very diminished appetite.

With PPC (and other cardiomyopathies), there is typically
an elevation of substances in the blood stream that
    reduce appetite.

    Quoted message said:

Some if not most of this would be water if it truly was
    "immediate."

    Quoted message said:

He assured me that the digitalis had no effect on my
    weight.

    It can by two ways:

    (1) Reduce water weight from increased diuresis when the
    heart has increased contractility.

    (2) Excessive digoxin can lead to GI upset (and loss of
appetite), nausea, vomiting, and even diarrhea.

    Quoted message said:

fact helping to keep my weight down.

Imho, there are multiple possible reasons besides the
digoxin to explain your weight loss.

is very important to keep my weight down. I have always
had weight problems and now I am back to being over-weight

Your being hungry is actually a good sign.

You should not fear being hungry. Nor should you give in to
    it while you are over-weight.

    Quoted message said:

Does anybody know anything about taking digitalis and it's
    connection to appetite?

    See above.

    Quoted message said:

Does anybody know of any other product out there that
kills the appetite as effectively as the dig?

Many chemotherapeutic drugs also kill appetite. Having
cancer kills the appetite. So does having tuberculosis.
    Major depression will also do
it. Crack cocaine, metamphetamines, nicotine and other
    stimulants too.

    Quoted message said:

And what are the risks in regards to CHF? (I know that
there are links between valve problems and Phen-Fen,
Meridia, etc and I'm not interested in taking medications

Better would be for you to stare down your hunger and ask
your doctor to supervise you on the 2PD approach:

    heartmdphd.comwtloss.asp

Ime, this always works for safe permanent weight loss.

    Quoted message said:

If you are overweight and hungry, you are not starving.

    Truth:

No one has ever died from hunger (there has never been a
death certificate issue with hunger as the cause of death).
People do die from starvation. Folks dying from starvation
    are not hungry.

  3. Judy,

weight loss is a very tough problem that I'm also struggling
with. My suggestion - eat for health, not so much for taste.
The NIH developed "DASH" diet - many fruits and veggies - is
what I'm on. See cspinet.orgdash.htm What
also works for me, and is related, is drinking grapefruit
juice (8oz) before each meal. Warning! Make sure the
grapefruit juice doesn't interfere with your meds. Final
note - don't fall for the two brain cell diet of Dr. Chung!

Instead , try the all new '1 pound diet'. It is guaranteed
to have half the calories as the 2PD diet. It also
guarantees that you lose weight twice as fast compared to
    the other 2pod diet.

    Enter the "1 pound" diet.

    1 love - 1 heart - 1 pound

    Just do it!!!

The "DASH" diet was not designed to help people lose weight

That would be 8 oz extra of something in your total intake.
Not good for someone who is claiming to want to lose weight.

    Remember

    1heart -1 love - 1 pound

  10. I lost over 40 lbs almost 3 years ago on Weight Watchers.
IMHO it is the most sensible "plan" out there. If you want
to know what REAL hunger feels like try not eating for 2 - 3
days. The hunger you are feeling in between meals is
upsetting but you are not starving. On any diet you are
going to feel hunger - bottom line. Sometimes hunger can be
confused with thirst. You're not thirsty you say ? The next
time you feel hunger try drinking several 8oz glasses of
water instead. Sometimes hunger comes about through boredom.
Keeping yourself busy will keep those hunger pains away,
especially if it's something you enjoy doing. Learn to eat
low calorie/fat snacks between meals. Instead of grabbing
for the bag of chips eat an apple instead. Eating smaller
meals more often is a good way of not feeling that "hunger".
When I get hungry I tell myself it's the diet working! I
keep on hand hard candy (Jolly Ranchers). 3 of those is 1
point on weight watchers. They last a long time and help to
soothe the hunger beast long enough for me to get home and
have a meal. If you really want to lose the weight you will.

    Good Luck ! Pete
