    Probably sooner than you think. If you keep up the short trips regularly
    your fitness will improve quickly and you will be able to increase your
    distance. Even really slow fat cyclists like me can manage about 10mph on
    the flat, so your target is 45 minutes of cycling each way. Not having to
    do there and back immediately makes the commute a lot easier than a single
    journey of the same distance.

    Get a computer so that you can see how far you have cycled. Then try to do
    just a little further each week. A weekly total mileage target allows
    flexibility for rainy days and the like, so it's a lot easier to stick to
    than a daily one. Keep a record so that you can see your progress. Aim
    for a Friday commute first, so you have the weekend to recover if necessary,
    and then start adding days.
