  1. I'm sure hubby wouldn't mind lending out that backhoe on
occassion ... not too sure how we'd get it out to you
though. Do you need to borrow an operator too?
<G> My dust bunnies have been kept fairly under control the
past few weeks, only because of the constant dried mud
clumps battle. There is nothing worse than waking up in
the morning, walking through the kitchen in a haze
while desperately seeking out the coffee ... and
crunching over dried up mud clumps. I can't seem to
teach my son that shoes go on LAST - not first and then
wander through the house searching out your hard hat,
safety goggles, lunch and coffee. When I do say

Good post from noting that weekends are just that and if
the overall trend is down but the WI is up from a low
somewhere else in the week, so what.... to realizing that
some "chores" have little to do with life-safety and we
need to figure out what is really important, including
taking time for ourselves. (you think I could borrow a
backhoe from your hubby's worksite once a year to move my
    dust bunnies outside?)

Just a thought here Julie ... if you always eat out on the
week-ends, higher sodium, bits of splurges, maybe you
would be better changing your meeting date to mid-week ..
or Friday? Then again, if you do the same thing week to
week, it should more or less balance out. Just me and my
    wishy-washy thought processes.
    <G>

If you are having problems with the multiple weight
checks, then you definitely do need to step away from that
home scale. Maybe try for a week or two to only weigh in
at your meeting. See how the week goes, if you are better
able to stay on track that way. I think we all have a
tendency to react the same way ... weight up, eat lighter
... weight down, can splurge a bit. This works well on
maintanence - probably not a good thing while trying to
lose though. But I do see an NSV in there. A little bit of
soul searching and discovering a problem area. This will
serve you well in the days ahead. We all need to learn
exactly where our problems areas are, and the best way we
    can combat them.

As far as the gym ..... just do it. Get up and go, quit
procrastinating if you really do want to go. A few weeks
into it and it will become routine, you will feel lost
    without it.

I have a very odd outlook on the housekeeping lately. Many
things get in the way of *me* time - chores around the
house no longer do. I figure that I have never heard of
anyone dying from a little bit of dust or clutter ....
dirty clothing ... unpainted doors ... clogged gutters,
etc. So *me* comes before those things. And it appears
they don't bother other members of the house either. New
rule in effect ... those who complain, can feel free to
take over the job. I finally accepted the fact that I am
not super-woman and will never be, despite what my family
seems to think. When I get the phone call that will add
one more thing to my list - I make the caller rethink
their options. Most of the time now they realize it is
something they can quickly and easily take care of
themselves. Passing it onto mom has only become a habit.
Try to get it under control now, put yourself first.
Decide what chores are life-altering or life threatening,
those that are probably do need to be taken care of -
those that aren't can wait. Dishes in the sink can wait

Results to date: 3.5 pounds lost.

I do my official weigh in on Sunday in hopes of somehow
detering myself from overdoing it on the food Friday and
Saturday. I don't know how well that has been working. We
went out to dinner yesterday and I had too much sodium in
my diet. I'm thirsty as heck this morning and I'm almost
done with liter of water #2. I'm down from last week's
sodium escapade so there may have been a loss somewhere
in there, but it is currently masked from going out to
dinner last night. Eh. Who knew it would take this long
    to lose 5 stinkin' pounds?

I found something rather interesting this week. I notice
that I do really well until I come up on a certain number
(usually found on my lowest weight day) and then I start
eating out at lunch and making poorer choices during the
week. I think I will be reducing the number of times I
weight a week, because I am completely getting in my own
way when I do. We'll see how that experiment goes.

I've been convincing myself that I should go to the gym
for quite some time and that I would start on a Saturday
so that if I do screw up, I won't beat myself up for it
too much. Well for the past few weeks I've been excusing
myself by saying, "It's too cold to go". Yesterday was an
icky day, but I managed to convince myself to go to the
gym. I'm pleased with myself. I didn't go overboard on
anything, just general movement that I needed to do. The
trick is to get myself to do that again today.

On a different note-kinda. I find it so hard to focus on
myself when there is all this work around the house that
needs to be accomplished. Does anyone have any
    suggestions?

    Julie

  2. Well, if not an operator, at least, an initial
    instructor (G)

The dust bunnies were revealed today when I got a new living
room chair and had to move the old one. I come back from
hiking camping trips and deposit drippings all through the
house on the way to the basement. While there is an outside
door to it, it seems harder to deal with then the entry hall
    as a quick waystation

  3. Thanks Joyce.

I'm actually not doing meetings. Just this group and
literature that I've had people purchase for me who go to
meetings. I think I will be switching weigh in day-I'm
just not sure which day yet. I've also been doing a bit
better on daily weighins...i don't pay attention to what
    the scale is saying
:-) and i'm not tracking it right now. I'm apparently
    :very good at
    maintaining though.

This is week before tom, so i've got some major thirst
issues going on (I drink water like it's going out of style
and then stay in the bathroom like it's going out of style-
sorry if it's tmi). I do feel lighter, but the scale isn't
reflecting for obvious reasons. I also went to the gym both
Saturday and Sunday of the weekend and plan to go tonight
after dinner. We'll see how that goes. Sunday I did squats,
so I had some serious muscle aches Monday and last night we
met with our buyer's agent-yay, we're going to buy a house.
    (Got any school district suggestion?)

What is odd is that I am finding that my shoes are too big.
Like they are ready to fall off...the socks aren't different
and I don't think they are wider from just wearing
them....maybe i'm losing weight in weird places like my
    feet. *shrug*

  5. geoduck? Sounds interesting. I'll have to look for it.

    I haven't tried urchin-that I remember and I like mackeral
too (if I remember it correctly. Firmer texture, silver

Yup, that about describes mackeral. Sweet shrimp has a soft

octopus which is so chewy many don't like it.

  7. Looks like I'll have to go to Puget sound to experience
that....what is the protrusion to the left of the clam
shell? I've never seen clam and shell as one.

I'm not a fan of octopus. I don't know if it's the suction
cups or the vibration I feel against my teeth when I try to
chew it. I'm also not a giant clam fan for the same reason.

like raw sweet shrimp probably because I like the deep

  8. Most (all) clams have what is called a siphon tube which is
how they feed. It retracts into the shell. The geoduck has
an exceptionally large one (which looks like something
    else!!! (G))

The siphon is the part used for the sushi, actually. They
don't always have it and it is a special item. The other
night they also had sauted geoduck with plum sauce but use
the more tender inner part of the clam.

The combo I generally have has octopus. Sometimes I like it
and other times I could pass.

  9. I thought it looked like something else *grin*

What kind of texture does the siphon have? Sounds like it's
a firmer texture. Is the siphon different than the lip? I
thought that clam strips are made from the lip.

Most (all) clams have what is called a siphon tube which
is how they feed. It retracts into the shell. The geoduck
has an exceptionally large one (which looks like something

The siphon is the part used for the sushi, actually. They
don't always have it and it is a special item. The other
night they also had sauted geoduck with plum sauce but use
the more tender inner part of the clam.

The combo I generally have has octopus. Sometimes I like
it and other times I could pass.

    I'm not a fan of octopus. I don't know if it's the

    the same reason.

Yup, that about describes mackeral. Sweet shrimp has a
soft mushy texture which some don't like - the opposite
of octopus which is so chewy many don't like it.

  10. The sushi has a solid crunchy texture as opposed to
rubbery/chewy like octopus. And it has a mild clam taste. It
might be the same as the "lip" but I'm not sure.

What kind of texture does the siphon have? Sounds like it's
a firmer texture. Is the siphon different than the lip? I
thought that clam strips are made from the lip.

Most (all) clams have what is called a siphon tube which
is how they feed. It retracts into the shell. The geoduck
has an exceptionally large one (which looks like
    something else!!! (G))

The siphon is the part used for the sushi, actually. They
don't always have it and it is a special item. The other
night they also had sauted geoduck with plum sauce but
use the more tender inner part of the clam.

The combo I generally have has octopus. Sometimes I like
it and other times I could pass.

    I'm not a fan of octopus. I don't know if it's the
suction cups or the vibration I feel against my teeth
when I try to chew it. I'm also not a giant clam fan for
    the same reason.

  11. I'll wait until next christmas to experiment. My mother
has a friend who knows sushi and can educate me properly.
She introduced us to Japenese cooking this past christmas
    and I like it.

The way I was presenting it was one of the easiest ways
I've seen. We had dinner at a Japanese co-worker's home
(sushi) and she presented it the way

    I

had displayed our dinner. Fish in one area, nori, rice,

To be fair, when you do it yourself it rarely looks like
the rolls you see in restaurants, but it

    sure

I tried making california rolls once and it took forever
to roll and cut, etc. That is why sushi is such an art.
    It's harder than you would

    believe,

  14. Sashimi is just raw fish - sometimes just a variety of raw
fish served over a bowl of rice, sometimes with just veggies
and no rice. Sushi is the stuff most people think of - a
slice of raw fish on a roll (finger shaped) of rice or
wrapped in seaweed like a California Roll.

Sashimi is becoming more popular among Atkins adherents
since it is just protein without rice.

I tend to favor sushi for the greater variety per order

It's a more delicate flavor than the cooked fish of
    whichever version

    you're

eating. Texture is a big one for a lot of people and for
your first time sushi experience you need to go with
someone who likes sushi and knows

    where

    Quoted message said:

to go. The wasabi factor plays a role in it and if you
have a sushi chef that puts too much on...well...don't
    bother.

Fred described it as tasting fresh. I'd agree. Consider
    lox-a very

    salty,

    Quoted message said:

mostly raw salmon. If you were to get a version of less
salty lox, you would find it to have a similar taste to
smoked salmon. If you don't have

    a

    Quoted message said:

problem with the texture of the lox you probably won't
have an issue with the salmon sushi/sashimi.

First time I took dh out for bait, I picked a lousy
    place. I hadn't been

    to

    Quoted message said:

that restaurant before and the sushi chef should have
    been strung by his

    or

    Quoted message said:

her toenails and fed to the sharks. I made such a fuss
about how it was a terrible sushi meal that he agreed to
trying it again. I took him to a great place for the next
experience and then we were good to go. He liked that
place for sushi so much that he has said the next time we
are within reasonable driving range (we live in Chicago,
the restaurant is in the Philadelphia suburbs) he wants
to go there. It's a good thing that we've got family in
    that area :-).

One things with fish in general is that if it has that
    fishy odor, it's

    not

    Quoted message said:

fresh. You have to watch too because a lot of places with
squirt the fish with lemon juice as the fish odor
component mixed with the lemon juice

    acid

    Quoted message said:

creates a salt that does not have an odor.

The way I was presenting it was one of the easiest ways
I've seen. We had dinner at a Japanese co-worker's home
(sushi) and she presented it the way

    I

    Quoted message said:

had displayed our dinner. Fish in one area, nori, rice,
wasabi, etc in separate locations and you rolled your
own. To be fair, when you do it yourself it rarely looks
like the rolls you see in restaurants, but it

    sure

    Quoted message said:

    does taste good.

I tried making california rolls once and it took forever
to roll and cut, etc. That is why sushi is such an art.
    It's harder than you would

    believe,

    Quoted message said:

but it is certainly very relaxing to do the chopping and

  16. I remember you saying before that you seemed to routinely
have one specific day each week that showed your lowest
weight. Maybe that would be the day to choose? But I also
seem to recall you saying (but it might have been someone
else) that you also had problems reining things in after you
saw that nice low number ... that you tended to splurge for
a day or so afterwards. If this is true, you might be
battling more than one issue. I officially started ww on a
tuesday, found early on that this just wasn't the day for me
to weigh in on - due to hectic week-ends and dinners out.
Over the course of several weeks I worked to change to
Friday's as the official day. The first week I changed the
day to wednesday, following week thursday, etc. This way I
wasn't weighing in 3 days later and showing little or no
progress, but also didn't go for 10 days without checking
in. It worked for me anyway.

Starting that exercise regime is going to play a little bit
of havok with the scales too, as your strained muscles will
retain fluids. Don't get frustrated over this, it will go
    away in a few weeks.

Where are you looking to buy a home, are you planning on
staying in the Schaumburg area? I really don't know much
about school districts in that direction - know more about
the area south of you (wheaton, glendale heights, carol
    stream, naperville, etc.).

Those shoes feeling big is very common. It isn't really that
you've lost weight in your feet that is making them smaller,
it's a gravity thing. It's because there is less weight
pressing on your feet so they don't spread out as far. At
least this is the way the doctors have explained it to me.

    Thanks Joyce.

I'm actually not doing meetings. Just this group and
literature that I've had people purchase for me who go to
meetings. I think I will be switching weigh in day-I'm just
not sure which day yet. I've also been doing a bit better
on daily weighins...i don't pay attention to what the scale
    is saying

Like they are ready to fall off...the socks aren't
different and I don't think they are wider from just
wearing them....maybe i'm losing weight in weird places
    like my feet. *shrug*

  17. Guess we'll have to figure out how to put a trip to WA onto
    the books. <G>

Ahhhhhhh, guess I'll be finding all those dust bunnies when
we replace our furniture - never thought about it. The couch
hasn't been moved for years. It's too heavy for me to do
alone, so pretty much just sits there and .... well ....
collects dust. <G> Unfortunately for me, there is no way to
get to our basement other than to trek through the house.
Wait! I could unlock one of the escape windows and make the
boys crawl through. But that would also mean I would have to
clean the [censored] collection off the counters. <sigh> I think
I'll just continue my daily sweeping routine.

The dust bunnies were revealed today when I got a new
living room chair and had to move the old one. I come back
from hiking camping trips and deposit drippings all through
the house on the way to the basement. While there is an
outside door to it, it seems harder to deal with then the
entry hall as a quick waystation

    Joyce said:

I'm sure hubby wouldn't mind lending out that backhoe on

though. Do you need to borrow an operator too?
<G> My dust bunnies have been kept fairly under control
the past few weeks, only because of the constant
dried mud clumps battle. There is nothing worse than
waking up in the morning, walking through the kitchen
in a haze while desperately seeking out the coffee
... and crunching over dried up mud clumps. I can't
seem to teach my son that shoes go on LAST - not
first and then wander through the house searching out
your hard hat, safety goggles, lunch and coffee. When
I do say something, he kindly reminds me of my own
rule ... those that complain, get the job. <sigh>

  18. It works for me. <G> I throw a large scoop in the washing
machine, along with a capful of liquid tide ... fill the
machine to the low setting and let things soak overnight
(or several hours). Depending on the stain I'm working
with, I sometimes will also pretreat the affected area with
the liquid tide. You wouldn't believe stuff that I have
completely gotten out of the laundry. Blood, mustard (which
usually never come out), grass stains ... even dye from
clothing that has run in the wash - and been through the
dryer. Soak it as above and it magically disappears. I go
through a ton of the stuff now that I'm dealing with my
    moms laundry.

  19. You're right about the weigh in day and controlling the
eating after seeing the lower number. This week, my lowest
day was Thurday because that was the day I was finally
feeling better after doing squats. I've got several issues
going on it seems and I've been trying to curb the obsessive
weighing in addition to it all. My lowest weight does seem
to be consistant though and it's not going down.

I did really well on Thursday while dining out for lunch
and dinner. Even with dinner later in the pm, and a tin of
salty anchovies the following day it only showed one pound
up and for me that's nothing at my weight. I selected my
dinner items leaning more towards veggies, which is odd for
me but I also found the food to be good so I think I'll
    repeat that again.

I didn't think that 3 pounds would make such a difference on
the shoes, but my feet don't hurt in the am as much, so I
guess that there is a major point to what your doctor says.

We haven't nailed down any specific place, but right now
we're looking in Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Roselle,
Hoffman Estates (211 school district), and we're
considering Bartlett. I know it's U46, but sticking in
Bartlett HS area finds some seriously good looking homes-
    curb appeal wise anyway.

be battling more than one issue. I officially started ww
    on a tuesday,

    found

    Quoted message said:

early on that this just wasn't the day for me to weigh in
    on - due to

    hectic

    Quoted message said:

week-ends and dinners out. Over the course of several
    weeks I worked to

    change to

    Quoted message said:

Friday's as the official day. The first week I changed
    the day to

    wednesday,

    Quoted message said:

following week thursday, etc. This way I wasn't weighing
    in 3 days later

    and

    Quoted message said:

showing little or no progress, but also didn't go for 10
    days without

    checking in.

    Quoted message said:

    It worked for me anyway.

Starting that exercise regime is going to play a little
    bit of havok with

    the

    Quoted message said:

scales too, as your strained muscles will retain fluids.
    Don't get

    frustrated

    Quoted message said:

over this, it will go away in a few weeks.

Where are you looking to buy a home, are you planning on
    staying in the

    Schaumburg

    Quoted message said:

area? I really don't know much about school districts in
    that direction -

    know

    Quoted message said:

more about the area south of you (wheaton, glendale
    heights, carol stream, naperville, etc.).

Those shoes feeling big is very common. It isn't really
    that you've lost

    weight

    Quoted message said:

in your feet that is making them smaller, it's a gravity
    thing. It's

    because

    Quoted message said:

there is less weight pressing on your feet so they don't
    spread out as

    far. At

    Quoted message said:

least this is the way the doctors have explained it to me.

I'm actually not doing meetings. Just this group and

    will be

    switching

weigh in day-I'm just not sure which day yet. I've also
been doing a bit better on daily weighins...i don't pay
attention to what the scale is

    saying

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

:-) and i'm not tracking it right now. I'm apparently
    :very good at
    maintaining though.

This is week before tom, so i've got some major thirst
issues going on (I drink water like it's going out of
style and then stay in the bathroom

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

it's going out of style-sorry if it's tmi). I do feel
lighter, but the scale isn't reflecting for obvious
reasons. I also went to the gym both Saturday and Sunday
of the weekend and plan to go tonight after dinner. We'll
see how that goes. Sunday I did squats, so I had some
    serious

    muscle

    Quoted message said:

    yay, we're

    going

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

to buy a house. (Got any school district suggestion?)

What is odd is that I am finding that my shoes are too
    big. Like they

    are

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

ready to fall off...the socks aren't different and I
don't think they are wider from just wearing

    feel lost without it.

I have a very odd outlook on the housekeeping lately.
    Many things get

    in

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    the way

    Quoted message said:

of *me* time - chores around the house no longer do. I
    figure that I

    have

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    never

    Quoted message said:

heard of anyone dying from a little bit of dust or
    clutter .... dirty

    clothing ...

    Quoted message said:

unpainted doors ... clogged gutters, etc. So *me* comes
    before those

    things.

    Quoted message said:

And it appears they don't bother other members of the
    house either.

    New

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    rule in

    Quoted message said:

effect ... those who complain, can feel free to take
    over the job. I

    finally

    Quoted message said:

accepted the fact that I am not super-woman and will
    never be, despite

    what my

    Quoted message said:

family seems to think. When I get the phone call that
    will add one

    more

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    thing to

    Quoted message said:

my list - I make the caller rethink their options. Most
    of the time

    now

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    they

    Quoted message said:

realize it is something they can quickly and easily
    take care of

    themselves.

    Quoted message said:

Passing it onto mom has only become a habit. Try to get
    it under

    control

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    now, put

    Quoted message said:

yourself first. Decide what chores are life-altering
    or life

    threatening,

    Quoted message said:
    Quoted message said:

    those

    Quoted message said:

that are probably do need to be taken care of - those
