  1. Dang, that's a lot of cleaning Lee. I'm impressed.

  2. -) Thank you. It was so easy to make and if you set it up so
that everyone rolls their own food, then you don't have to
talk hours putting the rolls together. Leave that to the
    sushi chef's.

I love kitchen stuff in general and if I had more space, I
would show it off more. When I'm in a house, I probably
will. I have a teacup collection that is pretty big (grandma
gave me that one, I've never used it) and very original. I
had a wonderful German dinner set with the soup tourine,
creamer, sugar bowl, 12 place settings with fingerbowls and
it was destroyed. It had a white background with small blue
flowers. The plates had a thin silver line around the edges.

If I remember to post them, I have a set of pasta bowls that
I like very much. I got them at William's Sonoma, but they
aren't online any more. It's a shame too, because I think
they were the nicest set they had. oh well.

actually still walk when I got home and although I'm a
little sore (tomorrow will really suck), I'm a lot less
stressed out that I would have otherwise been. That, right
there, is reason enough for me to go to the gym.

Tonight we had sushi. We also got the plates that we've
been drooling over for the last year or so at the Japanese
market. Check out dinner at our house on:
    jcatena.netsushi

I love to cook and present, dh loves to take pictures and
he couldn't resist pulling out the camera and posting
dinner. (Plus, I had to show the pattern to my friends who
know I've been drooling over it for a while.)

  9. good for you, one of the reasons we decided on the Rubbermaid is that
originally we figured it would stack and take up little room, the original
plan didn't work but I am glad I got them as they are just a bit deeper than

  10. NOT there are two reasons for this, well actually three. I do not like the
way he does it and if we followed your theory we would be doing separate
laundry and that would be too much. He did it for three years because I
couldn't bend over to get in the dryer because of my knee. I am so grateful
to be doing it again... and lastly, since there are certain things I can not
do because you have to see to do them, I feel it is very important that I do
as much as possible of the things that I can do. I do what cleaning gets
done, all dishes, and all laundry... I just scrubbed half of my living room
carpet last night. It would have taken him maybe 45 minutes to do the
entire job, it took me 1 hour 40 minutes, but, I did it all by myself, and
when I am ready he will come, inspect it, spot clean if I missed a stain
and after that dries, I will vacuum and he will finish it off. This works
good because the cleaning is more important to me than him and it gets to
looking pretty good when I do it, and he does nice finishing work so it
looks like we worked our butts off, Lee, hoping this makes sense as she is

  13. I think it tastes FRESH. Some of it does not have a lot of
taste. The consistency is what makes some folks
uncomfortable. Tuna is very tender and pleasant in taste and
a good starter item. There are also some cooked types so you
could start with that. There are more cooked items on some
menus to help introduce those who don't care for raw fish.

  15. It's a more delicate flavor than the cooked fish of
whichever version you're eating. Texture is a big one for a
lot of people and for your first time sushi experience you
need to go with someone who likes sushi and knows where to
go. The wasabi factor plays a role in it and if you have a
sushi chef that puts too much on...well...don't bother.

Fred described it as tasting fresh. I'd agree. Consider lox-
a very salty, mostly raw salmon. If you were to get a
version of less salty lox, you would find it to have a
similar taste to smoked salmon. If you don't have a problem
with the texture of the lox you probably won't have an issue
    with the salmon sushi/sashimi.

First time I took dh out for bait, I picked a lousy place. I
hadn't been to that restaurant before and the sushi chef
should have been strung by his or her toenails and fed to
the sharks. I made such a fuss about how it was a terrible
sushi meal that he agreed to trying it again. I took him to
a great place for the next experience and then we were good
to go. He liked that place for sushi so much that he has
said the next time we are within reasonable driving range
(we live in Chicago, the restaurant is in the Philadelphia
suburbs) he wants to go there. It's a good thing that we've
got family in that area :-).

One things with fish in general is that if it has that fishy
odor, it's not fresh. You have to watch too because a lot of
places with squirt the fish with lemon juice as the fish
odor component mixed with the lemon juice acid creates a
salt that does not have an odor.

The way I was presenting it was one of the easiest ways I've
seen. We had dinner at a Japanese co-worker's home (sushi)
and she presented it the way I had displayed our dinner.
Fish in one area, nori, rice, wasabi, etc in separate
locations and you rolled your own. To be fair, when you do
it yourself it rarely looks like the rolls you see in
restaurants, but it sure does taste good.

I tried making california rolls once and it took forever to
roll and cut, etc. That is why sushi is such an art. It's
harder than you would believe, but it is certainly very
relaxing to do the chopping and everything else.

  17. I guess as we elaborate, it also has a consistency similar
to pickled herring or some of it does.

Last night I had two wonderful geoduck sushi pieces.
Somewhat clam-like but nice and crunchy. I also had tile
fish which was new and I liked it. I've found some to be
an acquired taste like urchin. I happen to really like
mackeral while most find it to strong/fishy. And I like
raw sweet shrimp probably because I like the deep fried
    shrimp heads (G)

version of less salty lox, you would find it to have a
similar taste to smoked salmon. If you don't have a problem
with the texture of the lox you probably won't have an
    issue with the salmon sushi/sashimi.

First time I took dh out for bait, I picked a lousy place.
I hadn't been to that restaurant before and the sushi chef
should have been strung by his or her toenails and fed to

One things with fish in general is that if it has that
fishy odor, it's not fresh. You have to watch too because a
lot of places with squirt the fish with lemon juice as the
fish odor component mixed with the lemon juice acid creates
a salt that does not have an odor.

The way I was presenting it was one of the easiest ways
I've seen. We had dinner at a Japanese co-worker's home
(sushi) and she presented it the way I had displayed our
dinner. Fish in one area, nori, rice, wasabi, etc in
separate locations and you rolled your own. To be fair,
when you do it yourself it rarely looks like the rolls you
see in restaurants, but it sure does taste good.

I tried making california rolls once and it took forever to
roll and cut, etc. That is why sushi is such an art. It's
harder than you would believe, but it is certainly very
relaxing to do the chopping and everything else.

  18. Just a thought here Julie ... if you always eat out on the
week-ends, higher sodium, bits of splurges, maybe you would
be better changing your meeting date to mid-week .. or
Friday? Then again, if you do the same thing week to week,
it should more or less balance out. Just me and my wishy-
    washy thought processes.
    <G>

If you are having problems with the multiple weight checks,
then you definitely do need to step away from that home
scale. Maybe try for a week or two to only weigh in at your
meeting. See how the week goes, if you are better able to
stay on track that way. I think we all have a tendency to
react the same way ... weight up, eat lighter ... weight
down, can splurge a bit. This works well on maintanence -
probably not a good thing while trying to lose though. But I
do see an NSV in there. A little bit of soul searching and
discovering a problem area. This will serve you well in the
days ahead. We all need to learn exactly where our problems
areas are, and the best way we can combat them.

As far as the gym ..... just do it. Get up and go, quit
procrastinating if you really do want to go. A few weeks
into it and it will become routine, you will feel lost
    without it.

I have a very odd outlook on the housekeeping lately. Many
things get in the way of *me* time - chores around the house
no longer do. I figure that I have never heard of anyone
dying from a little bit of dust or clutter .... dirty
clothing ... unpainted doors ... clogged gutters, etc. So
*me* comes before those things. And it appears they don't
bother other members of the house either. New rule in effect
... those who complain, can feel free to take over the job.
I finally accepted the fact that I am not super-woman and
will never be, despite what my family seems to think. When I
get the phone call that will add one more thing to my list -
I make the caller rethink their options. Most of the time
now they realize it is something they can quickly and easily
take care of themselves. Passing it onto mom has only become
a habit. Try to get it under control now, put yourself
first. Decide what chores are life-altering or life
threatening, those that are probably do need to be taken
care of - those that aren't can wait. Dishes in the sink can
wait for an hour ... fire in the kitchen can't. <G>

Results to date: 3.5 pounds lost.

I do my official weigh in on Sunday in hopes of somehow
detering myself from overdoing it on the food Friday and
Saturday. I don't know how well that has been working. We
went out to dinner yesterday and I had too much sodium in
my diet. I'm thirsty as heck this morning and I'm almost
done with liter of water #2. I'm down from last week's
sodium escapade so there may have been a loss somewhere in
there, but it is currently masked from going out to dinner
last night. Eh. Who knew it would take this long to lose 5
    stinkin' pounds?

I found something rather interesting this week. I notice
that I do really well until I come up on a certain number
(usually found on my lowest weight day) and then I start
eating out at lunch and making poorer choices during the
week. I think I will be reducing the number of times I
weight a week, because I am completely getting in my own
way when I do. We'll see how that experiment goes.

I've been convincing myself that I should go to the gym for
quite some time and that I would start on a Saturday so
that if I do screw up, I won't beat myself up for it too
much. Well for the past few weeks I've been excusing myself
by saying, "It's too cold to go". Yesterday was an icky
day, but I managed to convince myself to go to the gym. I'm
pleased with myself. I didn't go overboard on anything,
just general movement that I needed to do. The trick is to
get myself to do that again today.

On a different note-kinda. I find it so hard to focus on
myself when there is all this work around the house that
needs to be accomplished. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Julie

  19. No, I love the powdered Biz - it gets anything and
everything out. This mud wasn't a stain factor, was because
from waist to ankle on the jeans was coated with wet mud ...
probably 1/4 of an inch thick. It was hillarious. I tackled
sonny boy before he even made it in the door - made him
strip down on the front stairs. I'm glad my husband phoned
    ahead to forewarn me.

  20. Good post from noting that weekends are just that and if
the overall trend is down but the WI is up from a low
somewhere else in the week, so what.... to realizing that
some "chores" have little to do with life-safety and we
need to figure out what is really important, including
taking time for ourselves. (you think I could borrow a
backhoe from your hubby's worksite once a year to move my
    dust bunnies outside?)

    stinkin' pounds?

I found something rather interesting this week. I notice
that I do really well until I come up on a certain number
(usually found on my lowest weight day) and then I start
eating out at lunch and making poorer choices during the
week. I think I will be reducing the number of times I
weight a week, because I am completely getting in my own
way when I do. We'll see how that experiment goes.

I've been convincing myself that I should go to the gym
for quite some time and that I would start on a Saturday
so that if I do screw up, I won't beat myself up for it
too much. Well for the past few weeks I've been excusing
myself by saying, "It's too cold to go". Yesterday was an
icky day, but I managed to convince myself to go to the
gym. I'm pleased with myself. I didn't go overboard on
anything, just general movement that I needed to do. The
trick is to get myself to do that again today.

On a different note-kinda. I find it so hard to focus on
myself when there is all this work around the house that
needs to be accomplished. Does anyone have any
    suggestions?

    Julie
