It's the weekend of 18-20 February.

We're based in Aberfeldy but we've been told we'll need OS Landranger
51. Aberfeldy is on map 52 and is 4 miles from the edge of map 51
........ but I'm not sure what difference those 4 miles will make to
the weather!

and Lawers is only 100 feet less high than Cairn Gorm and you can get
quite high (1800 feet) by car as well.

When I saw that the course was in Aberfeldy my first guess was that most of
the time would be spent around Lawers, simply because the visitor centre
road gets you into the snow and ice much quicker than anything else in the
area (and out again at the end of the day).

That said, if there's snow and ice on one of the local hills then the
instructor may just go there. I doubt that the course will involve going
higher or further that necessary, and so probably won't involve getting to
the top of anything significant.

Some of the first deep steep snow (week before Easter 1970 IIRC) I ever
encountered was on the Northwest side of Ben Lawers as we contoured
round to avoid going back over the the tops. The couple I was with were
confident that it wouldn't avalanche but it still worried me.

I hope they do get onto somewhere like the Lawers group, a real taste of a
true Scottish Hill.
The main Pic on my Munro Map thing is the Ben Lawers group, the blurred bit
between Ben Lawers and An Stuc is spindrift, it was taken on a truly wild
day!

Arh, Dewars whisky distillery!!! [story begins] Went through Aberfeldy a
few years ago and spotted the distillery. After I got back to work, Andy, a
work mate who's a single malt fan, asked (as he always did) what distillerys
I passed. I mentioned I'd saw a large one in Aberfeldy - then spent the
next few days trying to remember which one! So, it's taken 4 years to
remember, not bad, eh?

BTW, there was a very large ammount of tourists in Aberfeldy - surely they
all can't be going on the whisky tour?
