Wearing Yellow

If you have personal issues with wearing it then don't. No one expects you to be Lance, Tiger, Mike, or any other sports hero. People become inspired by what they do having a jersey is not a sign of disrespect quite the opposite in fact. It is a way of linking yourself to greatness, showing the world you are a fan. Would my gut seem out of place wearing a "Yellow Jersey" not while riding on the New Jersey Shoreline. Phil Ligget isn't commenting and there is no peloton. So who cares. I'm not going to buy one but it has more to do with the cost than anything else.

Just think about how many fans of other sports put on their favorite replica jersey just to watch a game. Wear what you want and don't worry about it. Besides, the yellow looks a lot better than the standard Discovery jersey.

Years ago my parents bought me a nice wool world champion jersey, rainbow-on-white. I liked it plenty. I was fourteen and wore it to my first bike race. The officials almost threw me out of the competetion until they realized that you could wear ANYTHING in the "citizen's" race. Incidentally, I was the ONLY guy out of about thirty without cycling cleats and lycra shorts.

I say wear what you like. If you really feel disrespectful, then leave it at home. If you feel good in it, wear it.

I want one myself, maybe one day I will be fortunate to meet Lance and could get it signed? I collect jerseys though and wear them (thats part of the fun of having them) and I think its a sign or respect that you want to associate yourself with that person (why I don my orange and blue on sundays-need to update to some non retired broncos tho'🙂 Besides its not as if cycling memorabilia is everywhere.

They looked cooler a few years back when they had the bubbles on them, but still a fine choice.

Pro cycling fans seem a lot more concerned about this kind of stuff than other sports fans. I play a lot of pick-up basketball at local parks and I always see people wearing their favorite NBA jerseys. Nobody ever accuses them of disrespecting Iverson because they cannot play as good as he does while he wears his jersey.

I think it is cool when I am out there and I see someone with a yellow jersey or a discovery jersey or a webcor jersey or whatever. I know that person is a fan and I share a sense of silent camaraderie with [font=Verdana]them as we ride. I think buying jerseys is also good because it supports the sponsors that support the sport we like to watch. I think wearing the jerseys also increases public awareness of the sport to whatever small degree.[/font]

theres a difference between wearing a team jersey and the winners jersey though.

i'm not saying i care, i'm just saying, wearing yellow isnt the same as wearing a disco jersey or an iverson jersey etc...

So how is wearing that yellow jersey any different from wearing the locker room hat and T of a Superbowl team or world series or nba champ or NHL champ (whenever that happens again) For that matter they also sell the probowl jerseys for those sports, basically anything that the pros wear is available and excepted in any other sport. Venus and Serena have their own clothing line so by that logic if they wore it on the hallowed ground of wimbledon its off limits? I just dont see how this is really an issue.

Here's the difference: The yellow jersey is the prize for winning (in addition to the money.) Wearing it would be analagous to showing up at football practice with a replica superbowl ring on your finger. (American "football" of course.) The hat and T are just commemorative items (I think?) which are meant for the fans just as much, or more, than for the team.

Well I do believe the intent of offering them is commemorative. Bye the way they do offer replicas of the super bowl rings to fans that want to pony up the dough. I wouldnt want one myself but they wouldnt sell them if there wasnt the demand. Also people buy items that players used for momentous occasions all the time, bats, balls, jerseys, heisman trophies, anything jose canseco still has left to sell. While I think that is all a bit over the edge, the yellow jersey is still just apparel. Its not as if someone is having the stanly cup reproduced and putting it in the den. Now thats not to say I dont see your point about the yellow jersey being the prize and if you are a really big fan and want to wear a jersey around town that a team discovery jersey would probably be in better taste. Still I doubt LA would be too upset about fans wanting a replica of his yellow jersey. BTW the tour has yellow jerseys in various sizes printed up with each team logo that go to the sponsors of the tour and not available to the public should they cease that practice as well?

Really? I bet the sponsors put those jerseys in frames to hang up at the corporate HQ. Or perhaps the tellers at Credit Lyonniase put them on for lunchtime rides. Actually, that would be a great sight: a whole peleton of yellow jerseys!

How about putting the question this way: Is there any difference between wearing the yellow jersey to a club ride and wearing the national-champion's jersey to a club ride? (Assuming you haven't won either of those.)

If you want one - get one. I, for one, would never mock or stare down my nose at someone for wearing a yellow jersey. Some people would though.... It's a shame. I've been riding for nearly twenty years and cyclists will always be the same - somewhat snooty and holier than thou.

Amen. Actually, a few more yellow jerseys out there on the roads might be a good thing here in the US. Drivers will recognize it: "yellow jersey.... tour de france.... Lance....etc." Might give cyclists a bit more respect on the road.

But, I have to say, I would have felt a little odd in Yellow on those training rides I did years ago where ther was a TDFrance finisher present. (Well OK, he was present for the first 15 miles, until I got dropped to the "B" group.)

I totally understand were you are coming from. I would not touch the Stanley Cup when it came through town. I have played hockey for many years and am past the whole being in the NHL thing but still could not get myself to touch the cup. Maybe if the Sabres win it once!!

Short sleeve silk dress shirts, are you sure its not "trinidaddave":p I dont see the harm in the replica jersey is all. Of course if your going to a club ride or city event you should be pretty darn good or you will hear it from alot of people! I am just suprised given the lack of popularity in the US and that this is the first time there has been a cycling icon that the average joe would want to attach themselves to that people would think it was a bad thing. Now if I decide to pony up the $150 for one it would be to add to my jersey collection and perhaps wear while watching the TDF not to go show off pretending I am LA on a bike. OF course I do wear my Carmelo Anthony Jersey to the gym even tho I havent been able to dunk a ball in about 10 years😄

May as well be... its HOT. Or maybe its because my budget for a peice of "performance outerwear" maxxes out at 3 bucks.

I ran over the junior national champion in a race once. He fell in front of me. Couldn't avoid the little [censored].

After that I went out and bought the red white and blue national champion jersey and wore it proud.
