I am sure this has been asked before, but we are going to Majorca in May for a walking (10 milers)/exploring holiday and looking for studio accomodation. I have downloaded loads of info but just thought their is nothing like first hand experience for reccomendations.

The hills north of Pollenca are good places to walk. Try Pollenca Puig de Maria as a starter. Conical hill near Pollenca. Suggest setting off early as the climb up the rough road is one long pull to the monastery on the top. There is a shop in the monastery where you can buy lemonade if it is a hot day. Wonderful views to the NE.

The north makes a good base, Soller maybe. IMHO the best map is the Discovery one, Spanish OS maps leave a bit to be desired. Note the train service down to the capital, if you want a day off walking. Palma has an excellent food market, port and cathederal.
I havent been walking there for a time but hear rumours about rich incomers making access problems so have an up to date guide book. -- Mike Reid Walking in Spain & Spanish regional cooking at "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk"

Would agree on the books and maps especially if you use a GPS as I do. Their indestructable maps are superb. We normally stay in Puerto Pollensa as this is a quiet and refined resort with NO TROULBE anywhere although it is busy. Walks up the Boquer Valley (don't stop at the finca and always say hello to the old lady if she is outside) is excellent and wonderful if you are a bird watcher. The hill tops are difficult but spectacular. HTH Brian

I just started reading their GPS book, might be convinced to part with the cash, yet! -- Mike Reid Wasdale-Thames path-London-Photos "http://www.fellwalk.co.uk" <-- you can email us@ this site Eat-walk-Spain "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk" <-- dontuse@ all, it's a spamtrap
IIRC June Parker's book covers the ridge, off which they regularly lose one or two walkers a year. The maps don't really show it very well and you have to see it to appreciate it. You get a good view from Cala San Vicente.

Do the map/guide include the Cavall Bernat ?
Yes, and there's a walk marked on "north and mountains" in dotted red so it will be in the guide book too. -- Mike Reid Walking in Spain, guides, photos, food etc. "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk"

I think I have missed a few messages ..... which guide are "we" reccomending?

Sorry Mike, its just that Majorca regularly pops up as a topic and the stock answer is 'June Parker - Walking in Majorca'. I think 'we' all assumed that it had already been said.

looking at the 1:40000 map, I don't think its going to be a great use on that sort of ridge. -- Mike Reid Walking in Spain, guides, photos, food etc. "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk"

It been suggested to me that it might start to get out of date now (I assume its not updated), any experience of problems, anyone? -- Mike Reid Walking in Spain, guides, photos, food etc. "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk"

It was more the getting to and from that we'd want it for, not much route choice involved on the ridge itself!
right, Discovery stuff is pretty up to date, so it will do that job. -- Mike Reid Wasdale-Thames path-London-Photos "http://www.fellwalk.co.uk" <-- you can email us@ this site Eat-walk-Spain "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk" <-- dontuse@ all, it's a spamtrap
