Way OT: PC question

I thought that re-installing Windows was standard maintenance for that
system.

On the one hand, assuming you backed everything up and hoping that MS will
allow what might appear to be installation of their software on two
machines, there is no reason why you can't do that. It would clear out
the horde of malware that you probably have on your system. Be sure to
back up your own stuff --- and be sure not to back up any virii (which is
the trick).

On the other hand, your 5-year-old hard drive has not much life left in
it, so you might want to get a new drive, and just use this old one as a
backup (after re-formatting).

Well I don't have a lot of other personal stuff on it. But I do have
some. Probably just use a flash drive and transfer all the stuff onto
that. I don't think I have a ton of malware, I try to keep it clean, but
I am sure a few slipped in under my scanners.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I know that this old hard drive
is not as fast as a current model.

I recently spoke with the Window's guy here at work regarding a similar
problem. He said he reinstalls everything on his home computers every
few years. It kills any germs and helps him reorganize his files. The
new hard drive is a very good recommendation.

I hate doing it though, it takes forever to reinstall all progarms and
my old data. And, you are never sure that reinstalling your data will
not introduce a hidden virus. Bummer.

As far as the new modem connection - if it is giving you trouble,
delete the old connection from the computer, the dialup network script,
and build a new one using the new modem type. That solved my problem
when I changed modems.

Well I know that this old machine has not been formated and reloaded in
at least a couple of years. So I am sure it's got little its and bits of
programs and other garbage on the drive. Plus the drive is five years old.

Well it does take a long time, but from previous exp. I think it might
just be worth it to get rid of the garbage.

I did that and then checked my "services" using task manager and found
that the "remote access connection manager" got turned back on when I
installed the modem I again turned it off and I think that may have
resolved my problem. We'll just have to give it a couple more days to
see what happens on the next couple of cold restarts.

Fdisk and then Format C: should do it. Then reinstall your windows once
again. If you have at least 512mg of ram you should breath new life back
into the old beastie. Remember, new formated reinstalled windows with lots
of ram is the trick.

I don't think it's necessary if you practice safe computing. Both my
installs are 5 y/o. XP Pro and XP Home. Both run great, but I do dual
boot both with Ubuntu, so the real life of the installs is less. Both
also have pretty much all "Windows Components" like Explorer,
Messenger, etc disabled and replaced by stuff like Firefox and
Trillian. I don't use antivirus and I don't run as an administrator.
I've had one piece of spyware in five years.

At any rate, if you're not as paranoid as me, you may have caught a
bug. Run Spybot (free and excellent) and a virus checker or two, such
as AVG or Avast to check for gremlins. While you're at it run a
drefrag to speed up the disk.

Winmodem you deserve all the trouble you get. Pony up and spend about
$50 to get a decent modem with it's own on board processor and not a CPU
sucking Winmodem. Your troubles should go away. Now you go away unless
it is a bike comment.

Gotcha. Didn't mean to be pedantic, sometimes you don't know what
computing level folks are on. FWIW, as a mainly Linux user, I can't say
that MS's software is necessarily full of holes, it's just a big target
is all. :P

Funny, whenever I've had wierd system issues that I just couldn't
figure out...I'd have my hard drive die within days. Very much worth
doing a diagnostic. Find out what brand it is, go to the site, and
download an ISO to make a diagnostic CD (or floppy). Wish I'd thought
of that before I lost a huge amount of files.

here aout cycling and I know that there are a number of computer tech
savy readers here. I was planning a ride this morning but the weather is
pretty nasty here today!

but the weather is pretty nasty here today!

20-25 MPH with gusts to 50. With bad sinuses, dust and everything else,
this kills my ride. I don't care about the cold and would probably
appreciate riding in the rain if the damned dust would go away. All the
new housing construction has turned all the once rice fields into
overworked construction dust pits.

continuous dust, the kind that makes people have to change the air
filter in their cars.

cyclists riding in a dry dusty place and they were wearing dust masks.
I wonder how effective they are and how long I would be able to stand
wearing one.

Well the weather here in the winter is just about right for cycling. But
then again in July and August when the temp is 90 degrees with close to
100% humidity I wish I lived in another climate.
