addl drive instead. shouldn't require a new power supply, maybe just a
y-connecter.
i had this drive that was all screwed up by windows or boot virus so just
for fun i downloaded red hat 9 (three disks) and installed it. it works
great, it's free, and there's lots of free stuff to download! first step in
quitting the ms habit.
Okay, I confess.
What happened was, I put Linux on my laptop, after going 10 years
without Linux. And I realized just how much fun I have with the darned
thing. So I think -- hey, I'll put it on my desktop, I have a huge hard
drive on that thing and I'm only using 15% of it. I'll split it 50-50
and have plenty of room for both. Dual boot. Fun, yar.
I appreciate that data shouldn't be smack on top of other data, but how
many programs really NEED 30 GB of free space on either side of them? I
mean really? There's data scattered all over the hard drive, including
some that makes it look like the most I could get for a Linux partition
would be maybe 20 GB. That's ludicrous.
So I rootled around online and ordered a new hard drive. If Linux has
to share a machine with XP, it'll probably be happier on its own hard drive.
The power supply, well, that can be worked around. My desktop IS using
all six connections -- hard drive, floppy drive, DVD, CD-RW, zip drive
and a bleeding edge video card with an onboard fan that requires its own
power connection. It's a Dell Dimension 8100, by the way, bought in
2001, with several upgraded components (like the video card) because I
can't leave things alone. *grin*
The bigger issue is the fact that the zip drive is on the ribbon with
the hard drive. Urk. Now I have to go Read The Fine Manual. *sigh*
