  1. This morning I'm putting on my cycling shoes and noticing
they're a whole lot tighter than normal, but actually
loosened up as I got further into the ride. Couldn't figure
it out; feet normally swell a bit as you ride, not shrink.
Then I'm thinkin' that maybe the previous-night's late meal
of a couple Jack in the Box tacos, along with a chicken
thingee, which I'm sure had a boatload of salt.

Is it likely that I retained water due to the excess salt in
    my system?

It is likely that you are pregnant.

    Possibly. See the following:

The gist: consuming high amounts of sodium results in 8-9%
more plasma volume. The upside: cardiac output also
    increased.

I knew there was a good reason why my preference for salt
    has been growing lately...

An old adage says "Where salt goes water stays." So yes
excess salt (sodium) will cause water retention. Need to
drink more water to dilute the salt.
