  1. I'm coming to Washington on the 21st. I'll be staying at the Embassy
Suites in Crystal City. I don't know Crystal City area very well and
will be limited to Metro/Taxi for transport (for the most part). I'll be
in class at George Washington University on the 24th and 25th, but
    otherwise fairly fluid with plans.
Any suggestions on good places to eat? Particularly if I'm dining solo?
    TIA

Nathan's if they are still around. They're in the Georgetown area. Last
time I was there I stayed at the Ritz Carlton on Du Pont. Their dining
room (can't remember the name of it) was excellent IIRC. From what I've
heard there are quite a few new places (new being opened in the past 10
years). I'll be interested to see who responds and what restaurants they
    suggest.

How long will you be there? I am only about 100 miles from there...
It wouldn't be too much of a drive (by Western Standards) for me to
    come up there for dinner.....

Want a dining companion, say on Friday?

Christine, wondering if Boli would be interested in driving up with
    her....

I just had a thought..if you will have Metro as transport, there is a
place that an old rfc'er (BKeith Ryder) took me too, in Rockville.
Called Joes Noodle House. Inexpensive, but wonderful food.

Also, there is now a Penzeys in Rockville.. Not sure how close it is
to the Metro, but I am sure you could call them and find out.

    Hmm..replying to my own post...

Wondering if there are other rfc'ers in that area? How would a
gathering of rfc'ers for dinner on Friday work? Would you be
    interested?

Hmmmm.. by jove! I think I could be! Thursday, Friday or Saturday night
would all work for me. I've got plans during the days for the most part
but the evenings are free. Lets do it!

I'm a sucker for ethnic foods in DC. I like Adams Morgan for that
reason... not far off the Dupont Circle metro stop, but I would take a
cab. I find Virginia rather dull other than the Little Saigon area in
Clarendon... mind you, it's been a while!

There's a great Afghan place down Jeff Davis about a mile south of
Crystal City (2700 Jeff Davis).. and just west of Jeff Davis in the
Crystal City area on 23rd st there's a whole cluster of restaurants,
including Bistro Bulgari.. of course, sushi, hispanic, kebab etc.. you
    don't have to drive..

One-half-block south of Dupont Circle, on the red line, is Sala Thai.
Downstairs. Cozy. Excellent. We never miss it when we are in D.C.
Go metro or taxi 'cause you can't park within two miles of Dupont
Circle. Sala Thai has other locations, but I can't speak for them.

If you like middle eastern food (or just fancy trying it!), I would
    highly recommend this one:

    http://www.lebanesetaverna.com/restaurants/crystal_city/

They have other restaurants, but this is the only one I've been to.
    Very good!

the washington *city paper* (our free weekly communist rag) has a
website to search for restaurants. this u.r.l. points to crystal
city, but you can do other metro stops or neighborhoods:

    <http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/food/search.php?sort=RestName&stage=process&restaurant=Restaurant+Name&cuisine=&neighborhood=&x=23&y=5&locclubs=&locmetro=193&locmovies=&loctheater=&locother=&price=&criteria1=&criteria2=&criteria3=>

    here's the main search:

    <http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/food/search.php?navBar>

the washingtonian magazine (a slick, and a little, well, tonier) has a
    similar page:

    <http://www.washingtonian.com/sections/restaurants/index.html>

....and a section called 'cheap eats.'

you can search either by type of cuisine, meal prices, etc. they're a
    good resource.

    your pal,
    blake
