30+ cars close to the Wasdale Head Inn. So as long as you aren't going on a
wall to wall sunsine bank holiday you shouldn't have a problem parking your
car, methinks. HTH

I think there's a few places outside the entrance to the NT campsite on the
main road - if my memory serves me right.

Then further west there's loads of parking off road, but it ain't Wasdale
Head ;-)

PS. I recently paid £6 to park at Glenridding car park. I was stunned. I
have a belief that ever so often I'll pay the parking to "contribute" to the
ELD Park, but that's taking the - now what word will I choose?

ISTR being dischuffed at whatever the charge was there some years ago.
However if you get there early enough there is a layby that takes about
3 cars a few yards upstream from the White Lion carpark and I suppose if
you have a brass neck you might get away with using the pub carpark.

reasonably priced than the large one in Glenridding, which seems to
have gouging the visitor high on its priority list. It's not exactly

that.

More worryingly, I have noticed that NT charges are escalating
rapidly, where I used to feel they had a long history of charging more
reasonable amounts. It's a long and slippery slope - introduce
charging at some point and sooner or later it becomes the easiest way
to rake in more money when it is felt that other fees have to be
held. It's also a very "lumpy" way of charging so after a few years
at £2 or whatever, a decision is then made to either raise it straight
to the next pricing point of £2.50 or £3 (wish I got pay rises like
that), or it gets into some nonsense like £2.80 and you have to
rummage for change (or end up paying £3 anyway as apparently in the
21st century machines still can't give change).

Yes, I know where you ment, Roger. There's also the lane leading to
Grisedale valley where there's about 10 places.

It's just the route I took ment I wanted to start and finish at Glenridding.
Now, I'll park outside somewhere and take a bike in!

My perception as well. Just joined the NT for £32.62. It won't take many
days to get that back as parking is now free in any NT carpark.

This suggests that the car park at the NT campsite is closed until
further notice, which I guess would put pressure on alternative car
parks. Is that out-of-date information? Anybody know anything more?

(I might be going there in about 10 days - only to park for the day, not
to camp.)

There is space by the entrance to the camp site which had a few cars in
it early afternoon (probably full).

I needn't have worried. I got there today at 8.30am to find only 2
vehicles in the car park before me. I presume this is the car park Theo
meant, a few 100 yards before the Inn. An hour later and there was only
about another 3 there. When I left at 1.30pm there were about 30 there
and it didn't appear anywhere near half full.

Why did I leave so early on such a glorious day? I ran out of energy in
a very short space of time and after 2500 feet of ascent it was as much
as I could do to put one foot in front of the other going up hill. A
Mars bar on the summit of Lingmell didn't help at all and while I
managed to get to Middleboot Knotts without a rest stop I needed 2
before Round How after which I called it a day and headed downhill by
the most direct route possible. I am fairly sure I wouldn't have made it
to the summit of great End if I had gone on.

My 3rd day out in the ELD in as many weeks and each one has got shorter
and more tiring. At this rate of decay I may not be able to get up a
single peak by the end of the year.

12th April
12.3 miles and 3750 feet of ascent in 5 hours 35 minutes. (Missed out
Outer Edge).

24th April
11.1 miles and 3000 feet of ascent in 5 hours 32 minutes. (Missed out
Pike O'Blisco).

2nd May
7.1 miles and 2500 feet of ascent in 4 hours 37 minutes. (Missed out
Great End to Scafell Pike).

I have been ticking off the few Nuttalls in the ELD that I hadn't
previously done. All pretty insignificant pimples that don't even make
the SWEAT list but there is nothing much new left for me to do within
daily travelling distance. I still have 3 or 4 still left and with my
declining fitness that could easily be 2 or 3 trips.

Anyway I am glad to be able to report that while I have no idea what it
was that afflicted me last week I am definitely over the worst though

theres a free 20 car space below Yewbarrow, 10 spaces opposite the
first campsite entrance, a big free carpark just short of the pub. The
pubs spaces are for clientelle

Thanks for the replies. In the event I didn't go to Wasdale. My
friends wanted to do Helvellyn, and that suited me as I hadn't done it
for years.
