You can get a decent second hand 'bent for less than the price of a
Brompton. I know, I bought one recently.

If thinking seriously about 'bents, I suggest a day trip to D-Tek in
Cambridgeshire and borrowing a number of s/hand machines to try them out. I
found my experiences of which model was best for what purpose didn't always
match up with what I'd read.

Need the money first. Oh, and have nowhere to store a 'bent trike (yes,
it would be a trike). But agree thoroughly with the trying bit. I've
already tried an anthrotek, and loved it but knew it was too upright for me.

Plus they're heavy, even by recumbent trike standards. And I think you'd
need custom luggage for it too - the wide rack is nice for transporting
big stuff, but not so good for ordinary panniers.

my trike are Shimano Octalink 170mm, and I strongly suspect I'd be better
off with shorter cranks. Can you suggest a source?

I note that the forthcoming VeloVision, which should be landing on
doormats Real Soon Now, should feature an article on short cranks by a
Mr. M. Burrows along with Ian Sims. So may be worth a read of that
before going ahead.
