Wanted: silver rear wheel

Is there a reason you're limiting yourself to these boutique wheels? If
you want "silver", why not have a good wheelbuilder (any good LBSs?)
build you up a set of wheels using Record or Chorus hubs, DT or
wheelsmith db spokes and an number of excellent silver rims from
companies like Mavic, FiR, Ambrosio, Sun or Velocity?

A good handbuilt will be *just as* light, strong and easier to repair
than those fancy boutiques. Further, you break a spoke, *any shop USA*
can fix it. What's not to like?

Because I have an orphaned boutique front wheel. I hope that's good
enough a reason. I have had a lot more problems with built wheels
compared to boutique wheels. It's been very hard to find a good
mechanic (with first hand experience and bills to prove it). Now I am
going to trust Campy and Mavic.

A new rear wheel you mention will cost the same as a set of handbuilts,
BTW-about $500.

The problem here is the guy uses a lousy wheelbuilder, period. A fancy
boutique Ksyrium or Campy wheel isn't necesarily going to give him a
*better* built wheel. It might.

Then again, if he crashes or has problems, rebuilding is probably not
going to be an option. Although replacement parts are available, the
cost is astronomical. For example, here are some prices for replacement
Campy rim and spokes, and this is "discounted" price:

And a full set of spokes for a single wheel (with 2 extras) is around

Well, having a boutique front wheel is not necessarily a "good" excuse
to buy one for the rear. Further, if the local wheelbuilders are lousy,
the guy could also go mail order to get an excellent wheel built. He
doesn't say where he lives, but he could contact someone like Peter
Chisholm (aka Qui si parla Campagnolo) at www.vecchios.com, Peter White
(www.peterwhitecycles.com), or Sheldon Brown. All have excellent
reputations for building fine wheels and would not only be cheaper than
a boutique, but if the wheel gets damaged, it would be easier and
cheaper to fix.

But I agree, if he wants to pay more, who am I to say he can't.....

Folks, it's new year's time. Just gimme a break, will ya? My ad was
"want to buy", not "want to debate". The boutique wheel v. built
wheel debate has gone on for very long and I am not interested in
participating here.
