  1. I have a tour easy that is ten years old . the bike has high pressure tires and a fairing. i have a
36 inch x-seam. Give me your ideas what is faster. V2, v-rex, volae club. what can i ride. the first
time i rode a recumbent was when i took it out of the box. i live in the southern part of georgia no
store closer than 200 miles. if i go to a store then i will be luckie to find the bikes i would like
    to test ride.

    Georgia Code 40-6-296. ...
    (d) No bicycle shall be equipped, modified, or altered in such a way as to cause the pedal in its
lowermost position to be more than 12 inches above the ground, nor shall any bicycle be operated
    if so equipped.

Therefore, any recumbent with a BB higher than that of a RANS Tailwind will be illegal to use on
public roads in Georgia unless it has abnormally long cranks.

  3. If you feel that it is not likely that you can find the bikes locally, you could check with Hostel
Shoppe about the Volae. Web site says it is returnable within two weeks. You'd have to pay shipping
and 5%, but it is not free to drive 200 miles either.

Will it be faster? Hard to say. It may be as fast as the TE, but it won't need the fairing. I would
say the big wheel, high BB bike has the greatest chance of being faster, of the ones you mentioned.
Of course this sort of bike is a _radical_ change from what you are riding.

Roy: If you like the Tour Easy but want more speed look into either a bodysock or a tailsok. Since
you live in Georgia the tailsok would probably be a better choice as it is cooler (your body is not
totally encased in fabric). My wife on her GRR is slower than I am on my Barcroft Virginia. When I
made the stupid move and got her a bodysock things changed. She is slower than I am on the uphills,
due to her being not as strong and the bike having greater weight. But on the downhills, long
straightaways and gently rolling terrain she is faster. On a ride in October to the Trinity site in
New Mexico we had a 13 mile slight downgrade with a mild tailwind. She was cruising (not sprinting)
at 30 mph. I was pushing and was doing 26. She just kept moving ahead. You can get info on all this
at the Easy Racers site. As to the bikes you mentioned, I think the riding conditions and how each
bike fits you might dictate which is faster. Of the three, the V-Rex is my favorite all around bike.
It does everything well, not the top, but close enough so that when you add up all the points it
comes out very high. Volaes are nice bikes as is the V2. Depends on whether you want SWB or LWB. If
you want some speed in a LWB have you looked into a Pursuit? Not a mainstream design but very fast.
If you want SWB and are willing to spend a little more, look into a Barcroft Virginia, my all time
    favorite. Good luck.

Before plunking down kilobucks on a new bike, why not make your TE faster? Those bikes can be pretty
fast with a bodysock. Also might want to use a heart rate monitor and some interval training to soup
    up the engine.

I wouldn't worry too much about GA bike statutes. Most cops I've met don't even care if you run a
stop sign, long as there's no resultant accident.

  6. First i don't see police officers going around measuring bb heights and if they were so what. I am
going to ride what i want to ride no matter what. That is like the law againist glass pack mufflers
but all the kids still run them. I want to know what will be the best option to go fast. Velocity
squared , V-rex , Volae vision . Is the Velocity squared faster than the tour easy? thanks Roy Dale

Roy, You didn't say where you are in S.Ga. If you're in the southwest area, you might try Ed
Deaton(Foolscrow) in Tallahassee. He usually has a variety of bikes he will let you try. It would be
a good half-day well spent. Anyway, no the V2 is not faster than a TE. Nor is a V-Rex. Volae, maybe,
depending on the conditions and rider. But its a tall bike. Probably too tall for you. I have a 39.5
X-seam and can barely straddle one. The TE is a great bike, and plenty fast with a strong rider. For
more speed you'll need to go lighter, with aluminum, titanium, or carbon; or you can go lower; or
both. In far south GA, bike weight should not be an issue. No hills, right? Better aerodynamics will
be your best bet. You could get that with a low racer. But you'd better try one before you buy one.
I ride a GRR. Last year BRAG went across the bottom of the state. I had no problem keeping up with
any solo riders and could stay with most tandems and pacelines. I expect things to be somewhat
different this year in the mountains.

I have ridden the TE and liked it. I generally ride a SWB Vision. I have been looking at the TE, GRR
and V2. After riding the TE I thought I'd like a higher bottom bracket, and to recline a bit more. I
wondered if the more erect riding position on the TE would make your butt more tired than the more
recumbent positions of other bikes. How much adjustment is there for reclining on a TE or GRR? Also,
at a glance, the V2 looked like it would have less wind... er.. breeze.. resistance.

  9. Thanks for all the information. I had a bike-e fx with the high bb and rode it on the dirt with no
problems. I just thought after 11 years on the tour easy that technology would have something that
was in the same price range that was stiffer and would be faster when all things are equal. The last
thing i am worried about is some cop jumping out of his car with a tape measure and measuring my bb
. i dont think there would be but just a handful that knows what a bb is. But back to speed , a 26-
26 short wheel base or a p-38 faster or not?

The people I have known that have owned both an Easy Racer and a P-38 believe that the front faired
Easy Racer is faster than an unfaired P-38 on flat to rolling terrain.

One of the main reasons Easy Racer owners switch to another type of bike is recumbent butt from the
upright seating position. The seat can be reclined some, but then the rider's hip angle becomes too
open and acceleration and climbing performance suffer.

An unfaired RANS Velocity Squared (V^2) should have a lower aerodynamic drag than an Easy Racer due
to the lower frontal area. The Easy Racer may have an advantage with both bikes equipped with a
front fairing only. Even though the V^2 would still have the lower frontal area (and more of the
rider's feet behind the fairing) the Easy Racer will likely have a lower combined frontal area and
coefficient of drag due to the rider's body being closer to the fairing. With bodysocks on both
bikes, the V^2 should have the aerodynamic advantage.

The Easy Racer will typically have slightly low drivetrain and rolling resistance frictional losses.

Easy Racer owners will always believe that their bikes are faster than the competition. 😉

  15. I owned both and found the P-38 slightly faster on the flats and definitely faster climbing.

Also, I did not get recumbent butt on the GRR nor did I get hotfoot on the P-38 or on my current
    Volae Team. Lucky, I guess.

  16. To clarify: I found the P-38 XT slightly faster on the flats than my front-faired Ti Rush and
    definitely faster uphill.

My Volae Team is perceptibly faster than both the P-38 and Ti Rush with the same effort and it
    climbs extremely well.

I think you will find both faster than the LWB. Either will out climb your TE. The only place that I
found a LWB to have a significant advantage over my P-38 was when cruising at speed. Both my P-38
and RANS Stratus (when I owned it) would quickly get up to cruising speed (20+ mph). The LWB would
hold that speed with little additional effort but the P-38 required work to keep above 20 mph. On
the other hand with any moderate hill the LWB would slow dramatically while the P-38 did not.

My limited experience on a 26X26 Strada, suggests that it compares favorably with the P-38
