Walking socks as a Xmas Present!!!

Thorlo, Smartwool, Bridgedale, Thousand-Mile Socks are prolly the four
"brands" to look for - they differ slightly in their make-up. But
rather than go into that you'd prolly best look to see which brands
you have available from a shop near you because that will be a greater
influence.

You could also try online options, or poss eBay.

Bridgedale, Smartwool and Thor Lo are all well thought of. If you've
not used these sorts of purpose built socks before you'll probably be
very pleasantly surprised at what a difference they can make.

As another possibility, albeit a more expensive one, Selaskinz
waterproof socks can be handy at times.

Because of problems with my feet I can longer walk in boots, so now wear
sandals whatever the weather. I bought a pair of Sealskinz mid-thermal and
put them to the test yesterday in the Peak District and can say they do
really work.I walked in as much water and mud as I could find and my feet
stayed dry all day.Walking in streams it did feel as though my feet were
getting wet but I think this was just maybe the cold coming through.
I would 100% recommend them.
The only down side is they may take a while to dry after washing.

Sometimes, but not often. More often I'll use them in light boots or
trainers that will keep the worst of the water out so the sock outer
doesn't wet out, which makes them fairly chilly.

Mine are still fine after about 3 years, I've had some Porelle Drys (the
previous version) for longer than that and they're still okay. I don't
make a habit of wearing them when I don't need them, which is a lot of
the point compared to built in waterproof liners. Why are you so
convinced they'll only have a short life?

I would have thought something acting as the soft cushion layer,
unlike boots which are tough as old, er, boots would not also be
able to maintain waterproofness at the same time, given the wear
I tend to associate with soft materials. They have to be both
soft and strong. and flexible, that's three things isn't it.

Mine lasted about a week before leaking. Maybe I was just unlucky but taking
a close look at them, the face material has a very open weave which you can
see the waterproof membrane through so I wouldn't have thought they were
very grit resistant at all and haven't put my trust in another pair.

And if you want a real bargain have a look in Tesco. Two pairs for 5
quid. I've used my first lot for over a year and they're every bit as
good as the Bridgedales I had before. At that price they're almost
disposable. Unfortunately though you'd lose credibility because they're
not a named brand.

wear against the shoe. Means I have to buy a new pair each year.

My current favourite socks are a 2 layer sock, black outside and white
inside. Prevents blisters and are still warm when I soak my feet. Very
good, but I don't know what brand. Highly recommended.

My other half has a pair of (IIRC expensive) walking socks that are marked
left and right.

I thought that was hilarious enough, until one day she put them on the wrong
way.
