  1. We're planning an expedition from Flatland to Sheffield on Saturday (to
look at Montane gear in Foothills). The cunning plan is to leave here
early enough and drive fast enough that we have time to spend a few
hours on a hill, too; I know Sheffield is near the Peak District, but I
know next to nothing about good walks in the Peaks. Any suggestions?
We're reasonably fit but have no experience hillwalking on snow/ice
(although as Canadians we have lots of general experience of snow and
    ice).

    regards

A couple of thoughts (both of which involve driving somewhat west of
    Sheffield);

    1) Start in the grounds of Chatsworth House, north to Baslow, continue
north along Froggatt Edge then return south via, say, Grindleford and
Calver. Terrain is reasonably easy and not too much ascent, and the
    views are good.

    2) Come even further west and try a route around Castleton, Edale and
Mam Torr. A bit more challenging, but should still be doable.

A bit more challenging sounds good -- why else are we in the gym at 0630
most mornings? :-) Thanks, Chris. I don't know what to hope for in terms
of weather; too good and we've no excuse to buy interesting stuff, too
bad and we might as well take the heavy gear.

  4. Course , Higgar Tor and Carl Wark are only about 20mins from
Sheffield. If enough time ,the Mam Tor -Lose hill walk , or from edale
go up Grindsbrook for a walk round Kinders southern edge is a belter.
At the mo' theres a thin covering of snow from about1,300ft.

Exactly, but you try telling people...

Thinking about it a bit more, if you're up for a 20-mile route you could
    do the Grindleford Gallop. See;

Agreed. I'd park at Grindleford Station, walk up Padley Gorge and
Burbage, over Carlwark to Higger. If you don't want to reverse it
you could go back via Owler Tor, Lawrencefield and Suprise
View, back to Grindleford station thorugh the woods. Nice mix
    circular.

Dunno about 20 miles, though. Depends on how much time we spend in the
    shop :-)

    Heloo,

I ave a fair few walks in the Peak District of varying lengths on my
    site at:
    http://www.britishwalks.org/walks/Named/PeakDistrictWalks.php

If the weather is good I think that I would suggest the Great Ridge
from Castleton - a superb walk, although a bit if a drive from
Sheffield. If you like moorland, a quick walk from Edale up onto Kinder
could be nice. If you do not want to drive so far, try the gritstone
edges above Grindleford (and ensure that you nipinto Grindleford Cafe
for a bite to eat and a mug of tea).

If the weather is worse, a walk through the White peak may be better -
I would suggest Lathkill dale is always worth a visit - see
    http://www.britishwalks.org/walks/2004/628.php for an example.

    Whatever you do, enjoy yourself.

    ..David.

We did, thank you! In the end we spent too much time (and money) in the
shop, so lunched at a recommended pub not too far away (The Grouse at
Froggatt) and afterwards walked White Edge and back along Curbar Edge.
Wind, rain, sleet and some snow... perfect justification for new gear
    :-)

    regards
