    Looked like a typical early-race stage. Not too steep, not too flat,
    breakaways but mostly not too far. Slightly unexpected finish, with
    Bradley McGee losing the sprint but taking the gold jersey: that after
    saying in pre-race interviews that he's given up all hopes of winning
    a grand tour. Not a typical start for him, is it?

    Peloton 40s back. Best wishes to those riders who went off the
    outside of the barriers on a bend 30 or so km before the end.
    What happened there? Not caught on camera that I saw.

    I'm fairly happy, as all my GC predictions stayed out of trouble
    and are still fairly high up.

    Only 30mins coverage on Eurosport, so I watched TVEI and probably
    missed tons of detail...

    Bertagnolli couldn't have asked for a better situation: only one guy
    managed to bridge up to him, and it was a guy who was in a position to
    give up the stage win in order to take the oro.

    The race didn't really begin until they hit the bottom of the Alto de San
    Jeronimo with 25 km to go.

    Iban Mayo lost 7:27 today, Oscar Pereiro lost 7:56. Yikes.

    But who'da (sorry, would of) thunk that he could outsprint McGee? Very
    good legs and perfect play by Bertagnolli.

    It's not completely out of the blue. He outsprinted Rebellin last year to
    win the Coppa Placci . I wonder if McGee knew that?

    Mayo sounds quite depressive to me. If you'd read the following interview
    you'd not been surprised by his performance today.

    To summarize he claims:

    1) To be having constant back problems.
    2) That he has not been forced to ride the vuelta. But that he is only there
    because the team management has asked him to.
    3) He is a "gregario" (domestique) for Aitor Gonzalez or Samuel Sanchez.

    I guess he didn't (doesn't!) know that; however he was forced to choose:
    taking his risks for the victory and getting at least golden
    jersey/losing in any case the pack sprint with Vicioso and Flecha in.
