    As I look at these again it seems that the signs are all reversed. If a
    rider improves from 8th to 7th place, isn't that -1 postion? And if a
    rider is now farther behind the leader by say 40 seconds, isn't that
    +40?
    After all, a low position and a low time are the desired goals.

    I would say he pulled a Pavel Tonkov sans flipping the bird. He must
    have been feeling really inspired to attack three times within the last
    10 km - he's 36 years old!

    He played the climb exactly right, and was lucky. He attacked the first
    time, maxing out at a 10 or 12 second lead, then held on when he got
    caught. A couple of km later he attacked a second time on the little
    downhill before the final climb, maxing out at a 10 second lead, and held
    on when he got caught. At that point, the only remaining riders were him
    and the first five guys on GC. They were all eyeing each other, so after
    about a minute he attacked one last final time guessing that no one gave a
    [censored] about him. He was right; no one gave a [censored] and no one budged. A bit
    later Sastre went and Mancebo was forced to respond immediately, so the
    other three had to, too. Then things settled down, the five rode up
    together, and Laiseka sailed in.

    The bottom part of the final climb was extremely tough, the top not so.
    Scarponi set a ferocious out-of-saddle tempo at the bottom to shred the
    peloton down to maybe 12 or 14 riders. Even Heras had to stand. It looked
    like Danielson was going to drop but he clawed back on. It looked like
    Sevilla was going to drop, and he did. Just before the final downhill
    section (where Laiseka attacked) it looked like Mancebo was in trouble.
    Luckily for him the road started to curve left so he was saved.

    The top wasn't steep enough to suit Heras.
