Richard Bates said:I recently sent the following email to Virgin Trains regarding booking
tickets via their website:
"PLEASE.... bring back the facility to reserve a bicycle place at the
same time as buying a seat. I've just wasted 90 minutes at my local
train station trying to do this (and still no luck)."
Their reply was as follows:
"Once you have purchased your ticket and made you booking, if you wish
book you bicycle onto the train, you have to contact the station that
you are travelling from. There is no facilty to make this reservation
on-line."
DOH! I bloody know there isn't. That's why I sent an email saying
please bring it back!

I'd heard horror stories when I booked a trip to the Peak District so
I was prepared for trouble when I phoned Virgin's booking line.
The bloke who took my call quoted me a very reasonable £229 (er,
reasonable compared to owning a car, that is) for an open return. I
threw in "and I'll be taking a bike" and even asked if this meant I'd
have to book it in person at a station. "Not a problem" he replied,
"I'll book it on for you now and if you decide to take a different
train just ring up and I'll re-book it." He even said that I *could*
just turn up but there would be no guarantee of a space.
Sure enough, two days later tickets arrive in post. All in order and
complete with bike reservation tickets to be attached to the bike.
On the way back, a friend decided that in the light of the foul
weather he'd take a train home rather than ride. His was only a short
trip but the Virgin train manager let the bike on for free without any
reservation.
