Has anyone here gotten a non-Kmart quality bike engraved? Does it
weaken the bottom bracket? Does it make things prone to rusture?

Just because they are called 'forbidden' transitions does not mean
that they are forbidden. They are less allowed than allowed
transitions, if you see what I mean. --unknown

Wouldn't mind getting the OCR done but too scared to ride it to work in
case it gets knocked off. Might get the MTB done but my attitude has
generally been if you get desperate enough to knock off that old beast,
you can have it.

Yes.

No. It's not particularly deep engraving, and you can just run over it
with something like nail polish if you're paranoid. It's often done just
up from the bottom bracket, to avoid the serial number already stamped
there.

But they do have a thing about its needing to be a driving licence
number.

The idea there is that, by engraving it with your driver's license
number, they can trace the owner of the bike through the VicRoads (or
other state) registry. Basically: V (for Victoria), followed by your
DLN. Queensland, presumably, would be Q then the number; WA, W then the
number, etc. Not sure what they'd do for NSW or the NT.

The idea there is that, by engraving it with your driver's license
number, they can trace the owner of the bike through the VicRoads (or

Neighbourhood watch also have regular 'marking' events - they used an invisible pen or similar. Apparently it shows up under some kind of light.
