Vermaut dead at 28 Former professional Stive Vermaut died early Wednesday morning at a hospital in Roeselaere, Belgium. Vermaut, 28, suffered a heart attack June 13 while out on a training ride, eventually succumbing to the effects of cerebral damage. He had been kept in an artificial coma but doctors were unable to save his life.
Vermaut, who ended his professional career in 2002 on the advice of his doctors, suffered a congenital heart disease. He began his career in 1998 with the Vlaanderen 2002 team, moved to US Postal Service for one season in 2000, before joining Lotto-Domo in 2001. As evidence of his heart condition emerged, Lotto-Domo decided against letting him continue riding, though he picked up a new contract with Palmans- Collstrop in 2002 before deciding to retire permanently. His one professional victory came in 1999 in a stage at the Circuit des Mines.

I doubt there is significant data to support professional cyclists living longer or less longer than the general population. Or even any increase or decrease in the occurance of heart disease.

Vermaut had a heart condition, arrythmia, said to be congenital (that means "from birth" BTW).
It's a shame that a guy who liked riding enough to continue after his forced retirement died this way, and so young.
It's also a shame that your first impulse is to use his death as an occasion to troll RBR.

The strange thing is that he had a heart attack during a ride at a very leasurely pace, nothing that would have stressed his heart too much.
He should have stopped racing immediately after his condition was diagnosed and not have given it another shot.
He liked racing too much too just accept his condition

He meant to say IQ. A professional cyclist is very lucky to reach an IQ of 60. Who could argue with that?
Don't know in other countries, but here in Italy cyclists are not known to be sportsmen of the non-intelligent kind. Nowadays is quite just the opposite. Since cycling is a sport in which you become a pro rather late (23+ years of age on average) most cyclists managed to get some decent studies, there even a few graduate ones (Pinotti comes to mind). Also cycling is a sport that requires quite a few strategical skills and the ability to learn from experience. OTOH soccer players, boxers and skiers are the sport people that usually show the lowest IQs and cultural levels. Soccer pros here are people that for the most part quit studying at 14 to train all day in big teams youth teams. Skiers are usually people from remote valleys where the rate of in- family breeding is very high and nowadays boxers are usually the most incredible kind of weirdos.

I remember Bartali died a few years ago, he was in his 80s- like 85 or something.
Some other riders from that era are still alive, like Fiorenzo Magni, the first "Lion of Flanders" and former national selectioner Martini.
