  1. Tried to disassemble Veloce rear hub today, and found sealed bearings. So
there's just a nut and a spacer at each end of the axle, and one nut came
loose, but the freehub end one wouldn't. Holding the hollow axle end in a
vice looks like a recipe for disaster - so how do I free the other nut to
get the freehub off? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Can you get an Allen key in the other end? I have an axle like this.

Is there a grub screw holding the nut on? .....

(I've got a Veloce rear hub but havn't done anything to it yet. I think
    best not to until necessary!).

The manual also describes a freehub grease port but I don't think the
Veloce has one, so it's all a bit suspect :-(

You can with Chorus type but I don't think so with Veloce.

I can get hold of the nut; it's how to hold the other end, which is just
hollow axle and looks like it would crush easily.

Mike was suggesting you get hold of the other end by sticking an allen key
in it (the hollow axle). But I think Veloce's is too small for it to have
hexagonal internals, unlike Chorus's that takes a 5mm allen key.

I'll have a look for a grub screw, thanks Pete.

I've been round the campag tech site, and agree that it seems a bit random.
I used it to disassemble an ergo lever and found that the instructions
missed crucial stages in the reassembly process.

Do you have a third nut that fits the thread ? If so, you can lock
two nuts together, and oppose the torque you're putting on the
stuck nut by gripping whichever one of the locked pair will
tighten them further. Or just hold the pair in the vice, if
    they're the same size.

You still need to be careful - you won't crush the shaft but you
can twist it or strip the threads.

    I've described it wrongly 🙁

Not a nut holding it on, but a bolt, ie the axle is threaded internally
(therefore no possibility of a hex key in there).

Judging by the exploded diagram here:

    http://www.campagnolo.com/pdf/spares02_B.pdf

(page 14 of 32, numbered 52 in the document)

the second "nut" isn't a nut at all, but integral with the axle. I'd guess
that, having removed the nut/bolt and any spacers that come away from the
left of the axle, you should be able to tap the axle out from the left with
a rubber mallet, supporting the face of the freehub body over a suitable
opening. The axle press-fit appears to retain the freehub body, so removing
the axle should allow you to lift the freehub body from the shell. Watch
you don't lose the pawl springs.

    The instructions here:

    http://www.campagnolo.com/pdf/121_Freehub_trad.pdf

are for the older cup-and-cone hubs (note the trheaded axle).

I'd suggest you ask over at rec.bicycles.tech though. One or two of the
regulars there will probably have experience of this.

Thanks for that, James. I'll give it a try.
